Darwen
Spitfire Railtours special on the route of the former Cotton Mills Express is seen in the passing loop at Darwen station on the Blackburn to Bolton leg of the journey on 03 October 2009. The driver of 45231 had been trying to keep the train moving but the northbound service failed to clear the single line section from Bromley Cross before he reached the section signal. The result was that the Black 5 had to restart the 9 coach train on the 1 in 64 climb south from Darwen which in just over a mile reaches Sough Tunnel and continues the climb through the 1 mile 255 yard structure. Not a place for novice drivers!
