The result was that the Black 5 had to restart the 9 coach train on the 1 in 64 climb south from Darwen which in just over a mile reaches Sough Tunnel and continues the climb through the 1 mile 255 yard structure. Not a place for novice drivers!

The rear of the train has just passed the current station at Pyle (its third location) which opened in 1994.
Abington: West Coast 37669 heading south from Abington after a stop in the U Loop. 37516 was dead in train (having run out of fuel the previous day) with a very alive Black 5 44871. The train was returning the second rake of coaches from Fort William to Carnforth on 3rd October 2017. The Jacobite service continues for two more weeks with the remaining rake.
Carstairs South Junction: The 10.51 Edinburgh - Euston joins the WCML at Carstairs South Junction, passing 70804 heading north with the Dalston - Grangemouth empty tanks. 3rd October 2017.
Crawford Viaduct: GBRf 66707 Sir Sam Fay heads north from Crawford with a Carlisle - Millerhill engineers train on 3rd October 2017.
Pyle: A loaded Margam to Llanwern steel coil train climbing Stormy Bank behind DBS 60054 on 3rd October 2017. The train is passing the site of the former Pyle Junction station. Nothing remains of Pyle Junction, which formed the east end of the triangle for the Porthcawl branch. It opened in 1886 and closed 1965.
Abington: DRS 88009 Diana speeds through Abington loops with the Daventry - Mossend Tesco train on 3rd October 2017.
Carstairs: Colas 70804 stands at Carstairs with the Dalston - Grangemouth empty tanks on 3rd October 2017.
Carstairs South Junction: The 10.51 Edinburgh - Euston via Birmingham takes the Up line away from Carstairs South Junction on 3rd October 2017.
Cardross: The ground shook and what a lovely racket. Nearly the end of another season and 37669, 37516 'Loch Laidon' and 44871 head south to Carnforth with the stock. (A day later than planned.) The second set will come down in a few days.
Cardross: On 3rd October 2017 WCRC 37669 accelerates classmate 37516 and Black 5 44871, together with the air-braked Jacobite stock, through Cardross enroute to Carnforth. 37516 was dead in tow having failed at Glen Douglas the previous day and requiring 37669 to be sent north from Carnforth to effect a recovery.
Carstairs: DRS 66431 nears Carstairs Station with a Mossend to Carlisle engineers train on 3rd October 2017.
Dunkeld and Birnam: An Edinburgh service pulls into Dunkeld on 3rd October 2018. Platform 2 is not signalled for Up trains and is only used for passing. A HST on driver training is about to do just that. This training has been going on since at least September last year so these drivers are going to be pretty hot.
Perth: When there's no Edinburgh to Inverness service there's an Edinburgh to Perth one, forming an hourly service between the capital and The Fair City during the day. The unvarying platform for the latter trains is 5, and a 158 prepares to return to Edinburgh on 3 October. Although Platfrom 6 is numbered it has no departure screen and seems to be used only for occasional stabling.
Perth: The 1116 to Inverness pulls into its usual Platform 7 at Perth on 3 October 2018.
Falkland Junction: D60 Lytham St Annes and D8549 leave Falkland yard with a train for Polmadie Mineral Sidings.
Ladybank: With the crossover being south of the station Up trains off the Perth line have to use the Down platform. A four-car 158 from Perth to Edinburgh calls on 3 October. The village of Ladybank is entirely a railway creation, even down to the name. It's claimed that location was previously known as Ladybog.
Dunkeld and Birnam: Unlike further north there appear to be no immediate plans to replace the semaphores here at Dunkeld. The station and its neat signal box have a look of a scaled up model railway when seen from the A9 (or did until the trees grew a bit).3rd October 2018.
Perth: Perth got MAS early and still has at least some of the original signals with their long cowls. The repeater signal - with hand-made number - seems to be of the same vintage. Mechanical repeaters are now rather rare.
Ladybank: A Dundee to Edinburgh service calls at Ladybank on 3 October 2018. A train from the Perth line would of necessity be using the other platform.
Dunkeld and Birnam: Edinburgh (right) and Inverness services pass at Dunkeld on 3rd October 2018. The left-hand line is only used when trains need to pass. The low height of the platform is obvious and there may be fun and games here if HSTs with manual doors are to call.
Breich: The refurbished westbound platform at Breich on 3rd October 2018. The new ramp is on the eastbound side.
Newton Junction [Ayr]: 45125 and 60088 Book Law pass under Tam's Brig with signal box in background heading for Ayr shed.
Ladybank South Junction: Removal of vegetation in (non-railway) groundworks immediately to the southwest of Ladybank station has revealed this struture in all its modest glory. It was formerly in the 'V' of the junction with the Kinross line. This trailing junction was some distance south of the station, so I am guessing that trains were propelled out of the bay platform and were hauled to Kinross once clear of the points.
Warrington West: A view east from a bridge over the railway of the platforms, footbridge and lifts at Warrington West on 03 October 2019. The station building is at footbridge level, out of view to the left. Everything appears to be ready well in advance of an opening in December 2019.
Warrington West: The new station at Warrington West seen from the south side of the Liverpool to Manchester CLC route on 03 October 2019. The station looks ready to use but trains don't stop yet; the expected opening date is at the December timetable change.
See query 2171
Warrington West: 21st Century railway architecture is certainly different from that of the older stations. Hopefully this example of the station building at Warrington West will prove to be functional and practical (unlike some of the flat roofed designs of the early 1970s). Warrington West appeared to be ready to open on my visit on 03 October 2019 but potential passengers will have to wait until the December timetable change to take advantage of the new facility.
Morecambe South Junction: Freightliner 66610 heads a short train of box wagons south on the WCML at Morecambe South Junction. This was running from Hardendale to Tunstead on 3rd October 2019 but the train usually loads to many more wagons than this.
London Euston: Those telescopic yellow steel barriers at Euston look like a formidable obstacle to late running passengers - which could explain why the railwayman seems to be rather happy with them. 3rd October 2019.
Boat of Garten: Black 5 No.5025 arriving at Boat of Garten with the 12:45 from Aviemore on 3rd October 2021.
Boat of Garten: Black 5 No.5025 powers away from Boat of Garten with the second train of the day for Broomhill on 3rd October 2021.
Brighouse: RHTT 2022 Season Begins. Autumn is upon us! 66847 'Terry Baker' heads the 11:38 Grimsby Town - York Thrall Europa Rail Head Treatment Train at Brighouse on its way back from Halifax. 66849 'Wylam Dilly' is on the back.
Yarmouth [IoW]: What looks like an 0-6-0T 'Terrier', made from small tiles in the Roman fashion, adorning the wall at Yarmouth Castle.
Kirkcaldy: A display inside Kirkaldy station about Mary Campbell Smith, author of the poem 'The Boy on the Train'. The poem itself is displayed with a photograph of the poet. Alongside is a plaque commemorating the opening of the refurbished station in 1991.
Hebden Bridge: 60026 'Helvellyn' heads 6E10, 11:26 Liverpool Biomass Tml to Drax, through Hebden Bridge on 3rd October 2022.
Yarmouth [IoW]: A vintage advertising sign, one suspects pre-WW1, extolling the services provided by entrepreneurial Mr Cooper of Freshwater (Tel No.32), who was also the local agent for the LSWR. This sign is still mounted in the pier car park at Yarmouth.
