Aultnaslanach Viaduct

A Class 40 takes a southbound train over the wooden trestle bridge at Aultnaslanach, just north of Moy, in 1976. Class 40s became regular traction on the Highland Main Line in the mid-1970s, but were never a great success. Their weight and gearing did not suit this heavily-graded route - the photographer's son recollects one particular occasion on a southbound train when a Type 4's speed on the climb to Slochd Summit dropped to less than 15mph. The notable wooden bridge in the photograph was first crossed by a train in 1897 and is the last of its type to carry a main line in Scotland. A major project aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of this historic structure was undertaken in 2003 see image 20481.
