Night mail; this is the portion from Edinburgh (one coach) waiting for the Glasgow portion (seven coaches) at Carstairs of an evening in 1989. This portion usually arrived first. Extra parcels would be added and then it would be drawn to the west end of the station. Then the Glasgow portion would pass east through the station, stop, and then back down on the Edinburgh portion before heading south. The use of the 47 betrays that the Carstairs-Edinburgh line electrification was then not complete.
