I always associate the Swindon Class 123 Cross Country units with the Western Region Paddington services but towards the end of their lives a number appeared on Transpennine routes. Here set C708 approaches Chinley in 1978 on a Hope Valley line working. It is unfortunate that none of these units, with the stylish wrap around windows, were preserved. Adrian Morgan advises me that he explored the possibility of preserving one of these Swindon units and also a Class 124 Transpennine vehicle but both proposals were blocked by BR at Derby because of the level of brown and blue asbestos contamination in both types of unit.
