Peebles Gasworks [Eshiels]

The large Scottish Borders Council depot at Eshiels on the eastern edge of Peebles, built on the site of the town's former gasworks. The large sheds, now grade B listed buildings, were originally built to handle deliveries of the large volumes of coke used by the gasworks. Trainloads of coke arrived via the Peebles - Galashiels line, which ran past the rear of the site, with wagons being propelled back from the main line into the works. The wagons continued into the far away shed, through the now bricked-up arch on the upper level, where the coke was discharged into hoppers.
