Valdaora: In 1974, there was still some regular steam hauled traffic on the Italian section of the picturesque line from Fortezza (Italy) to Lienz (Austria). A couple of passenger services and most freight services were usually hauled by FS Class 741 2-8-0 locomotives. There was also a Friday night/Saturday morning 'Touropa' charter train from Dortmund that brought German holidaymakers to the area and this required double-heading over the steep grades from Fortezza to Dobbiaco. The train is seen here in the Saturday morning sunshine waiting to cross a westbound train at Valdaora-Anterselva station. The double-header on this occasion had a 741 piloting a Class 740.

Valdaora: A 1974 photograph of a 2-8-0 of the Italian 741 class climbing towards the station at Valdaora-Anterselva, on the Val Pusteria route, with an eastbound freight from Fortezza. Valdaora's Church of St Mary of the Assumption is prominent, typical of the fine architecture to be seen in the towns and villages along this very scenic route in the South Tyrol. Class 741 was a rebuild from the rather more conventional-looking Class 740, with the chimney placed at the right-hand side of the Franco-Crosti boiler. The design was a precursor to the ten similarly-fitted BR Standard 9F locomotives.

To my knowledge no EMU has yet been painted in the 'Scotland's Railway' livery (nor has a Class 158) but surely a 334 would look the most striking, so used are we to it's predominantly pale colouring (the only one it has had). Livery change seems to be a slow process: it took nine years from the first appearance of the SPT maroon and cream in 1997 to repainting of the last orange and black unit. On that basis maroon and cream will be around for another eight years. Exactly a year on since its first sighting station signage rebranding seems to be the priority at present. See image [[20385]]. Peebles Gasworks [Eshiels]: The large Scottish Borders Council depot at Eshiels on the eastern edge of Peebles, built on the site of the town's former gasworks. Trainloads of coke arrived via the Peebles - Galashiels line, which ran past the rear of the site, with wagons being propelled back from the main line into the works. The wagons continued into the far away shed, through the now bricked-up arch on the upper level, where the coke was discharged into hoppers.
