This is a two platform station on the Millerhill Deviation (Network Rail), a new section of line required for the re-opening of the railway between Edinburgh (Newcraighall) and Tweedbank, south of Galashiels.
It is located on a passing loop which starts at Newcraighall South Junction (formerly Millerhill Yard Down Secondary Sorting Sidings). This location is just south of Newcraighall North Junction and Newcraighall station. The loop runs south to King's Gate Junction close to the site of Sheriffhall [2nd] via the station.
The line is supported and promoted by the Borders Railway Community Rail Partnership .
DeviationsTo the immediate east of Shawfair is the course of the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway. This was replaced, due to its having several tight bends, by a new alignment further east for the opening of the Edinburgh and Hawick Railway (North British Railway), itself given up and not used for the opening of the Borders Railway due to the construction of the Edinburgh City Bypass on a long oblique over the trackbed. |
