Valdaora
In 1974, there was still some regular steam hauled traffic on the Italian section of the picturesque line from Fortezza (Italy) to Lienz (Austria). A couple of passenger services and most freight services were usually hauled by FS Class 741 2-8-0 locomotives. There was also a Friday night/Saturday morning 'Touropa' charter train from Dortmund that brought German holidaymakers to the area and this required double-heading over the steep grades from Fortezza to Dobbiaco. The train is seen here in the Saturday morning sunshine waiting to cross a westbound train at Valdaora-Anterselva station. The double-header on this occasion had a 741 piloting a Class 740.
