Hythe: A Class 309 EMU, forming an evening service from Clacton & Walton to Liverpool Street, approaches Hythe along the bank of the River Colne on 9th August 1976. A halt for local services was proposed near this location in the early 1960s to serve the nearby University of Essex, which was under construction at the time. The halt was intended for students obliged to live off campus in towns as far away as Clacton and Brightlingsea, as well as university staff. However, by the time the first students arrived in 1964, the Brightlingsea service had already become a casualty of the Beeching cuts and the plan was shelved after limited stop bus services took the potential trade.

Colchester Town (St Botolphs): A quiet Saturday at St Botolphs station, Colchester, in August 1980. A DMU for Sudbury is about to depart while shoppers wait for the following electric service down the line to Clacton and Walton. Amidst the harmony there is, by current standards, a discordant note, and that is the small boy in a driver's hat about to climb into the empty cab. The youngster was being treated to an unofficial cab ride from Sudbury and back, and no doubt he had a memorable day. The signalman remarked that lots of strange things happened at weekends 'because there were no [expletive deleted] inspectors about'.

Gargunnock: This shot was taken from a Network Rail helicopter returning from Fort William after a visual Earthworks and Drainage survey of the West Highland Line. There had been very heavy rain in July so it was decided to do a quick check viz. 2 hours feeling airsick. Some other lines had been badly affected by torrential downpours and massive local flooding that year and the previous year. The view is towards Stirling. In the foreground is descernible the alignment of the former Forth and Clyde Junction Railway running close to and at a tangent to the loops of the upper Forth. To the right is the distinctive outline of the Gargunnock Hills. These are composed of volcanic rocks of Carboniferous age, around 340 million years old. The lavas were most likely erupted from fissures rather than shield volcanoes. These lavas are interspersed with layers of volcanic ash. A summary of the geology can be found here: http://www.snh.org.uk/publications/on-line/geology/loch_lomond_stirling/view.asp

Latimer Road: View from the south end of Latimer Road station on 9th August 2013. The angle of the 1864 viaduct wall on the left is the only clue to the one-time Latimer Road spur which diverged here to descend to a junction with the West London Line north of Uxbridge Road station. This was used by a Metropolitan Line shuttle service from Edgware Road to Kensington (Addison Road) (now Kensington (Olympia)) which was withdrawn as a WWII economy in October 1940 and never reinstated. This also saw the closure of Uxbridge Road station while the rest of the Latimer Road spur was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new north/south road. The remains of Uxbridge Road station entrance, which was actually situated on Holland Park Avenue, survived until demolition in the late 1960s. Today, the site of its platforms is more or less occupied by those of the London Overground's Shepherd's Bush station, which opened in 2008. The wide spacing of the tracks is a result of the removal of the broad gauge rails in 1869 when GWR trains ceased to run to Hammersmith after only five years, the line consisting of mixed gauge until then to accommodate both GWR and Metropolitan Railway trains.

Shepherd's Bush Market: Metropolitan Locomotive No. 1 passing Shepherd's Bush Market station during the 150th Anniversary of this section of the London Underground, on 9th August 2014. This was originally a joint railway from Westbourne Park to Hammersmith served at first by both GWR and Metropolitan Railway trains and was built with a mixed gauge to accomodate the wider GWR trains. These ceased after only five years in 1869 and the broad gauge rails were removed, resulting in the wide space between the tracks at this and the other stations between Hammersmith and Westbourne Park.

Part way up the stairs inside this entrance is a staffed ticket office, further stairs to the Manchester platform and a long subway to the southbound platform stairs.

Levenshulme: Close up of the power pack of Driving Trailer 77449 of Flex unit 769456, at Levenshulme on 9th August 2021. As a 319 EMU there would have been very little underframe equipment on this vehicle but now both DTs carry a MAN engine. The bogies are still unpowered though and the engines generate power that is transmitted to the traction motors on the motor coach through the cables that once carried power drawn from the third rail.

2012Innovative response to Highland landslip short-listed for top rail award [Railscot]Rail and council leaders have been short-listed for a prestigious UK award for their innovative joint response to last winter’s landslip at Stromeferry. ScotRail, Network Rail and Highland Council are in the running for the Outstanding Team Effort title at the Community Rail Awards. The short-listing comes after rocks and debris fell on to the A890 Stromeferry bypass during severe weather on 22 December 2011, forcing the closure of the key Highland road and leaving motorists facing a 140-mile detour. To help Plockton High School pupils from Applecross, Kishorn and Lochcarron attend classes, ScotRail provided an additional morning train and free travel for the students. By March, a unique temporary road surface had been built over 150 metres of train track. Made out of rubber matting, it created a diversionary road for vehicles under 7.5 tonnes when the line was not being used by ScotRail’s trains. Traffic along the route was controlled by Network Rail and Highland Council staff on site. Winners of the eighth annual Community Rail Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Swindon on 28 September 2012.
2013Edinburgh trams: Contractors admit concrete blunder [Evening News]BLUNDERING workmen have derailed the trams project by cracking vital concrete sleepers – setting back the clearance of vital roadworks and dealing a blow to any notion of the trains running by Christmas. An original estimate of four weeks to fix a concrete problem between Haymarket and Shandwick Place is now likely to take in excess of four months, leaked e-mails have revealed. It is understood the delays have occurred after concrete sleepers used to stabilise the tracks were cracked during drilling to remove the rest of the incorrectly laid concrete. The bungle raises questions about the ability to hit the December deadline the council is believed to have been privately working towards. The Evening News first reported in late May that more than 150 metres of concrete would need to be relaid through the West End after several areas failed quality assurance tests. The stretch of route affected is believed to be closer to 500m.
2013Britain’s busiest signal box – Restored [NRM]Today, Friday 9th August, work began on restoring ‘Britain’s Busiest Signal Box’ to display condition. Over the next three weeks rotten wood will be cut out, new lap boarding applied and the whole structure given three coats of wood friendly paint. The effect of Borough Market Junction was to create Britain’s busiest signal box as service density and the resulting time gaps between trains passing over the junction massively increased. With traffic peaking at 89 trains an hour, Borough Market Junction often required two signallers to keep the trains moving. It all ended in 1976, when the box was de-commissioned and brought to York.

2016Virgin East Coast rail staff vote to strike [BBC News]Virgin East Coast rail workers have voted to go out on strike in a dispute over job cuts, working conditions and safety, the RMT union has said. Five out of six (84%) of those who voted in the ballot backed walkouts and the union said its leaders will now consider their next move. Destinations on the line include London, Aberdeen, Inverness and Hull. Virgin Trains responded to the result by saying it would run a full timetable during any RMT strike action.
2016ScotRail and RMT union in fresh talks over strike action [BBC News]ScotRail and the RMT union are holding further talks in a bid to resolve the industrial dispute which led to strike action in June and July. Further planned walkouts by train staff were called off last week, but a final deal has yet to be reached. The dispute centres on proposals to run more trains where drivers rather than guards operate the doors. Last week, ScotRail offered a guarantee that there would be guards on all new electrified trains. The RMT then announced it would suspend five days of planned strikes while talks continued. The union insisted the dispute was about ^ensuring Scotland^s trains run safely^. But ScotRail said the RMT had been running a campaign of ^disinformation that doesn^t bear any scrutiny^.
2017Work to extend Edinburgh trams to Leith could start in 2019 [Scotsman]The case to extend the 1A line from York Place to Newhaven is now set to go under the scrutiny of councillors over the coming weeks. While the case itself could be given the go ahead by the end of September, a final decision on whether to proceed - and with which contractor - would not happen until autumn 2018. Council leader Adam McVey said: As the fastest growing city in Scotland, and with our existing system nearing capacity, we have to look at ways of enhancing our public transport system. The planned tram extension route takes in Scotlands most densely populated area. Taken with low car ownership, developing high capacity transport to Newhaven would bring a range of local benefits in terms of boosting economic growth, creating jobs, enhancing accessibility, reducing congestion and improving air quality.
2017Aberdour station up for top award [ScotRail]The ScotRail Alliance has congratulated a local artist whose work to restore part of a West Fife railway station has been nominated for a major award. Aberdour signal box, located on the platform at Aberdour station, has been shortlisted in the ^Most enhanced station buildings and surroundings^ category at the Community Rail Awards after it was restored and converted into a studio for local artist Lynette Gray earlier this year. Lynette, from Kinghorn, was encouraged to visit the signal box after her success in converting disused space within Kinghorn station into a studio and gallery. Seeing the potential in the grade B listed space, which had lain empty since it fell out of use in 1981, she agreed to take it on. Renovation works began in February, with the official opening in April, and was made possible through support from the ScotRail Alliance, the Stations Community Regeneration Fund and the Railway Heritage Trust. James Ledgerwood, the ScotRail Alliance^s head of economic development, said: ^We are absolutely delighted for Lynette. It^s wonderful to see redundant buildings being given a new lease of life. I know I won^t be the only one wishing Lynette the very best of luck, given just how much she has done for stations in Fife and the local community. The ScotRail Alliance is working with people across the country not just to deliver the best railway Scotland^s ever had, but to also to make a difference to local communities.^
