Opened for passengers. Service runs from Gateshead via the Brandling Junction Railway and Stanhope and Tyne Railway to Washington before continuing to Durham (Rainton Meadows).

Proposed Team Valley Railway receives Act for line from Gateshead to Newton Hall to Leamside. Line was to have a branch from Newton Hall to Durham, Relly Mill and Bishop Auckland.

Route altered to run from Leamside to Bishop Auckland via Durham and Relly Mill.
30/07/1855Dearness Valley Railway
Act passed for line between Durham and Waterhouses. Line connected at western end with colliery line to East Hedleyhope and tortuous line to Crook [2nd] via the Stanley Inclines of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
