Valdaora

A 1974 photograph of a 2-8-0 of the Italian 741 class climbing towards the station at Valdaora-Anterselva, on the Val Pusteria route, with an eastbound freight from Fortezza. Valdaora's Church of St Mary of the Assumption is prominent, typical of the fine architecture to be seen in the towns and villages along this very scenic route in the South Tyrol. Class 741 was a rebuild from the rather more conventional-looking Class 740, with the chimney placed at the right-hand side of the Franco-Crosti boiler. The design was a precursor to the ten similarly-fitted BR Standard 9F locomotives.
