In 1974, there was still some regular steam hauled traffic on the Italian section of the picturesque line from Fortezza (Italy) to Lienz (Austria). A couple of passenger services and most freight services were usually hauled by FS Class 741 2-8-0 locomotives. There was also a Friday night/Saturday morning 'Touropa' charter train from Dortmund that bought German holidaymakers to the Italian South Tyrol and this required double-heading over the steep grades between Fortezza and Dobbiaco. The double-header on this occasion had a 741 piloting a Class 740, and the train is seen here near Valdaora.
