A quiet Saturday at St Botolphs station, Colchester, in August 1980. A DMU for Sudbury is about to depart while shoppers wait for the following electric service down the line to Clacton and Walton. Amidst the harmony there is, by current standards, a discordant note, and that is the small boy in a driver's hat about to climb into the empty cab. The youngster was being treated to an unofficial cab ride from Sudbury and back, and no doubt he had a memorable day. The signalman remarked that lots of strange things happened at weekends 'because there were no [expletive deleted] inspectors about'.
