As a Norwich-London service enters Ipswich on 24th September 1977, a trainee driver sets out to spoil the photograph and convey his attitude to rail enthusiasts by gurning and gesticulating. This kind of mockery was new at the time, but it spread widely towards the end of the last century, fostered by some comedians who chose to target 'anoraks' as an alternative to more politically assertive groups. If the trainee is a driver today, he will now be in his 50s. Here's hoping nostalgia for the 1970s railway scene brings him to this photo!
