The former home and distant junction signal has been 'converted' to a straightforward home for the line through Maryhill Central, the line towards Kirklee having been lifted.
Balgray Tunnel: Not long after emerging from Dawsholm depot, an odd-looking combination of Standard 4 2-6-4T 80004 and Standard Class 4 2-6-0 76046 heads towards Balgray tunnel, complete with guard's van in tow, off to collect a haul of mineral wagons from Clydeside. 24th September 1964

Ipswich: As a Norwich-London service enters Ipswich on 24th September 1977, a trainee driver sets out to spoil the photograph and convey his attitude to rail enthusiasts by gurning and gesticulating. This kind of mockery was new at the time, but it spread widely towards the end of the last century, fostered by some comedians who chose to target 'anoraks' as an alternative to more politically assertive groups. If the trainee is a driver today, he will now be in his 50s. Here's hoping nostalgia for the 1970s railway scene brings him to this photo!

On two occasions in late 1943 and again in early 1944 the viaduct attracted the attention of the Lancasters of 617(Dambusters) and 619 Squadrons in an attempt to sever the strategic route between southern France and Italy. Little damage was caused to the railway whilst one aircraft was lost and two airmen were killed by defending gunfire.
Clitheroe: A long way from Barry Island. Arriva Wales Sprinter 150282 was on loan to Northern Rail on 240911, with a sticker in the windscreen denoting this fact. Serving the Ribble Valley rather than the South Wales Valleys the Arriva livery makes a change from the usual Northern Purple liveried units as it waits to leave Clitheroe for Manchester Victoria on a wet Saturday lunchtime.

With a ban on standard gauge colliery locos working over state railway owned tracks in Bosnia having just been imposed, this 760mm gauge operation is now the only 'real' steam operation left in Europe, although it is hoped that the SG ban can be lifted once the appropriate paperwork is in place, allowing a few Kriegloks to return to trip workings at Dubrave and Sikulje.

After being vacated by Russells Agriculture the site was acquired by Tesco, but after the accounting scandal it was decided that it was no longer to be developed. Unfortunately, a decision was taken to demolish the station building. A small housing estate Weighbridge Close has been built off view to left of the station site, and in 2020 a veterinary practice was built where this view was taken from; although the actual station and track area beyond is covered by mounds of spoil. See image [[71989]]
Kirbymoorside: Looking north along West Lund Lane across overbridge HMY18 on the west edge of Kirkbymoorside. The trackbed appears extant heading west almost to the A170 road that cuts across the former route some 100m east of the former Starfitt Lane level crossing. Nunnington: Looking north to Ryedale Lodge, the former Ryedale Lodge Hotel, now a private house formed out of the former Nunnington Station. Tree growth over the years is obscuring more of the property compared to earlier views. A deep cutting exists on either side of the road bridge, but, due to the land contour, the platform was sited beyond the cutting north end.

Both sets had left their starting points at 13:45 and once coupled, they formed the 14:08 train to Brandenburg. Both trains are Siemens Desiro 2-section articulated Class 642 DMUs and this composite shot shows the Scharfenberg coupler (German: Scharfenbergkupplung or Schaku) in action. Designed in 1903 by Karl Scharfenberg, this coupling is now widely used for general passenger and mass transit systems. With thanks to Bill Jamieson for locomotive information.

Vattholma: A postal train, originating in Norrland (the North of Sweden), passes on its way south towards Stockholm. At the end of 2019 the train service between Sundsvall and Stockholm will be replaced by lorries as it is 'uneconomic' to run a train for the ever-decreasing number of letters being sent within Sweden. Postnord, the Danish and Swedish combined public postal service, claim that they currently send 65% of letters by train between rail-head terminals and that they have stopped sending letters on internal flights. The railfreight company Green Cargo normally has green coloured locos see image [[58316]]-perhaps they feel that this decision is not very green?
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: Passengers arriving at Queen Street Station on 24th September 2019, presented with a view of Glasgow's fine architecture through the new facade.

Glasgow Queen Street High Level: The new glass facade of Queen Street Station, seen from the namesake street, on 24th September 2019.
Charlestown Goods Signal Box: The sea wall at Charlestown, with Crombie Depot beyond, in September 2020. I think the upright section of the wall is the site of where the signal box stood.
Elephant and Castle: The entrance to the National Rail station at Elephant & Castle, from the shopping centre, on 24th September 2020. This was the final day of the shopping centre which ceased trading and was closed for good by evening time in readiness for demolition and redevelopment of the area. When this centre was opened in 1965 it was the largest in Europe but had become very rundown and grubby in recent years and only a few shops were still open in its last few hours.
Farington Curve Junction: Heading north from Crewe to Carlisle on 24 September 2020 are D6817 and D6851 (aka 37521 and 37667), seen approaching Farington Curve Junction. The pair of Class 37s are scheduled to move to Mossend on Friday to takeover a private charter from Euston and take it forward to Aviemore. A trip to Kyle of Lochalsh is planned for Saturday before returning south on Sunday and Monday.
Braeside Junction: The base of the point lever at Braeside Junction, with a piece of track just visible in a gap in the vegetation to the right, in August 2020. The tree growing between the tracks shows how long the line has now been disused. As a boy I spent many happy hours on walks changing the points here!
Elephant and Castle: 700043 to London Blackfriars departing from its penultimate stop at Elephant & Castle on 24th September 2020.

St Pancras International: High Speed Javelin unit just emerged from tunnel and approaching St. Pancras International over the bridge across York Way, that opened in November 2007 when HS 1 services were transferred from Waterloo. This view is through the front upstairs windows of a New Routemaster bus on route 390 to Archway on 23rd September 2021. Another New Routemaster (which are nothing like the traditional Routemasters of old), also on route 390 to Victoria, can be seen in the background about to pass beneath the bridge. This once bleak area north of King's Cross has now changed out of all recognition with not only HS 1 but new towering office blocks and flats.
Moy: Winter is coming. Clean and shiny Rail Head Treatment Train, hauled by clean and shiny 66122 and 66126, nearing Inverness from Carlisle on 24th September 2021. They will not remain that way for long!
Rossie Viaduct: Scotrail HST headed by 43031 crosses Rossie Viaduct as it nears Montrose with an Edinburgh to Aberdeen service on 24th September 2021. When constructed, the single line viaduct spanned a tidal channel which was one of the two entrances to the extensive Montrose Basin. Land reclamation and construction of a revised road network has resulted in the only entrance to the Basin now being spanned by the nearby South Esk Viaduct (see Image [[74883]]).
West Kirby: 508114 awaits departure at West Kirby with the 13.36 circular to Liverpool Central and back. Class 508 were originally intended for Merseyside but once built by BREL at York in 1979 to 1980 some worked on the Southern Region before moving to Liverpool from 1982 to 1985.

Southport: Class 769 769458 arrives a couple of minutes late at Southport from Stalybridge. It joins 769456 already in the staion and which is soon to depart with the 11.16 for Alderley Edge on 24th September 2022.
Hayes Knoll: I made a quick trip down to the Swindon & Cricklade Rly on 24 September 2022, in time hopefully to see the newly overhauled GWR 0-6-2T 6695 running about. It was in steam but unfortunately parked up near the Hayes Knoll signal box with a few minor faults.
Ormskirk: 508115 is on the 0949 Departure to Liverpool Central from Ormskirk in September 2022. Note the sand drag in the foreground before the bufferstop. The DMUs arriving from Preston have a similar arrangement behind the camera.
Chester: Merseyrail 507009 already has the green signal for departure from Chester with the 16.15 circular back to Chester via Liverpool Central. When travelling on these EMUs it must be remembered that there are no toilets. The stations do have facilities but the staff need to unlock them. Chester is the exception, but don't hang about as the turnround time can be as low as 4 minutes if you want to catch the same train back.
Liverpool Central: Merseyrail seat covers thoughtfully provide games to pass the time 1. Count all the dots, 2. Count the light grey squares, etc. If they are all a blur then you should have gone to Specsavers or you are not sober
Kirkdale: 508136 departs from Kirkdale with the 17.36 for Liverpool Central. 508138 is the unit at the top end of Kirkdale depot and some of the new Class 777 units are just visible too. Introduction of the 777s is presently delayed. Meanwhile the availability of Class 507/8 which are all over 42 years old now is somewhat less than desired especially at peak times when there is demand for 6-car trains.
Hooton: A close up of some of the advertising graphics on 508111, yes that is Paul McCartney. It is believed that 508111 will be offered for preservation when it is withdrawn by owners Angel Trains. Others feel that preserving either 507001 or 507002 would be more appropriate given that the late Queen rode in them from Moorfields to Kirkby when they were first used back in 1978.
Kirkby: 508136 is seen at Kirkby with the 17.28 departure to Liverpool Central on 24th September 2022. Visually there is no difference between Class 507 and Class 508. The 508s were originally built as a 4-car units but have only been 3-car on Merseyside. Their compressors are more prone to making a loud banging noise and their lights can flash on and off when the contact shoes go over points and cause sparks at track level.
Taw Valley Halt: Class 73 electro-diesel E6003 'Sir Herbert Walker', S&CR duty passenger locomotive on 24th September 2022, runs round its train at the Taw Valley Halt, suitably framed.
New Brighton: 507010, with the grey brushed metal livery with yellow graphics, stands at New Brighton with 14.38 circular back to here via Liverpool Central. There is a 10 minute turnround time here, which is not enough time to pop down the road outside to look over the sea wall if you are doing the system in a day.
Boat of Garten: Strathspey Railway's Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-0 46512 arriving at Boat of Garten with a train for Broomhill on 24th September 2022.
Preston Riverside: LYR Pug No 19 visiting from the East Lancashire Railway crosses the bridge at Riversway with the last train of the day on the Ribble Steam Railway.
Ormskirk: Nearing the end of its working life, 507012 is at Ormskirk waiting to depart with the 18.19 to Liverpool Central on 24th September 2022. There is a sharp contrast between this photo and that of 507024 taken here around 40 years previously [[82738]]. Just about everything shows changes, from the buildings, the platform, the lighting, the track layout, the trees and bushes and even a mobile phone mast is visible in the top left corner. You can cover the whole Merseyrail system with a Day Rover ticket. Cost today was only five pounds sixty but the 507s and 508s will not be around much longer.
Blunsdon: BR Class 73 E6003 'Sir Herbert Walker' departing south from Blunsdon, with a Swindon & Cricklade Railway service to Taw Valley Halt, on 24th September 2022.
Ellesmere Port: 508139 in Platform 1 at Ellesmere Port with the 15.42 circular departure back to here via Liverpool Central. Platform 2 cannot be used by EMUs as it is not electrified. Currently there is only the Ellesmere Port trains which have a 30 minute service during the day, everywhere else being every 15 minutes. This was not the case back in June when many of the units suffered from Wheel Bearing issues. This is thought to have been caused by the new power supply introduced in readiness for the Class 777 units.
Boat of Garten: Strathspey Railway's Ivatt Class 2 No.46512 heading north out of Boat of Garten with the first train of the day to Broomhill on 24th September 2022.
Clitheroe: From a standing start before the level crossing, 34067 'Tangmere' makes a spirited departure from Clitheroe with the Northern Belle 1Z81 Carlisle - Telford on 24th September 2022.
Liverpool Lime Street: Platform 4 at Liverpool Lime Street hosts a Northern Class 323 EMU on 24th September 2022. Alongside is a TPE Class 802 waiting to form a service to Newcastle.
Chester: New Class 197 197002 stands in the holding sidings at Chester on 24th September 2022. This is one of the 51 new 2-Car units being built by CAF for Transport for Wales. There will also be 26 3-car units. They appear very similar to the Northern 195s but with a corridor connection.
Lymington Pier: London Southwestern 450038 at Lymington Pier on 24th September 2022, just before heading for Waterloo.
Ocean Terminal [Tram]: Track installation is nearing completion on the gap between Ocean Terminal and the terminus at Newhaven (in the distance), seen here on 24 September 2022.
Southport: Northern's Class 769 769456 stands at Southport with the 11.16 to Alderley Edge. The Class 769 were originally Class 319 but are now modified with Diesel power as well, so that there operating range is beyond the wires.
Hunts Cross: 507013 with its yellow background livery awaits the green signal at Hunts Cross with the 12.21 to Southport. There are six versions of the vinyls, yellow on one side and a grey brushed metal on the other. The graphics on the vinyl have the opposite colour to the background. Northern's Allerton Depot is in the far distance and this is passed by trains using the Liverpool South Parkway low level Merseyrail platforms
Broomhill Junction: Strathspey Railway's Ivatt Class 2 No.46512 heads the last train of the day to Broomhill on 24th September 2022. Pictured passing Tullochgorum, the fenced off mound in the left background is the remains of a Bronze Age burial cairn.
Blunsdon: BR Class 73 E6003 'Sir Herbert Walker', being the S&CR's passenger locomotive for the day, sits at the head of a train in Blunsdon station on 24th September 2022.
Hooton: Stabled at Hooton on 24th September 2022 is Merseyrail 508111. It has the special Blue coloured Beatles Story Livery and graphics. John Lennon is visible at this end and side of the unit, largely because he is wearing spectacles!
Southport: 507030, with its yellow background livery, is ready depart Southport with the 10.58 to Hunts Cross on 24th September 2022. 507013, in the alternative Grey background livery has just arrived at 10.55 from Hunts Cross and will depart at 11.13. This is the longest turn round time at any of the Merseyrail terminus stations.
Shanklin: London Southwestern 'Island Line' unit 484003, arriving at Shanklin, with the 1307 train from Ryde Pier Head on 24th September 2022. These are the not so new train sets, refurbished District Line ones, replacing the much older cars of 1938 stock.

Long lines snake back from ticket windows under the 50-foot ceiling of white, gently undulating steel that floats cloudlike over the departure hall.
