Clackmannan and Kennet: UK Railtours special from Kings Cross passing Clackmannan on 25 September 2008.
Croxley Green: Despite the fact that Croxley Green station is closed, there is still a sign (of sorts).
Lancaster [1st]: The view out from the rear of the original terminus of the Lancaster and Preston Junction Railway, only used as such from 1840 to 1849. The old trackbed area is now occupied by relatively modern hospital buildings. Of interest is what appears to be a stable block, possibly associated with the railway station but also probably used after that time when the station building became a private home. The old station was given to the Lancaster Infirmary as a Nurses' Home in 1924. This view looks south and the goods yard that survived the station closure until the 1960s was just beyond the far buildings. The stables building fronts onto the A6 main road immediately south of the city centre. Photo taken with the kind permission of the Morecambe Bay Hospital Trust Estates Department.
Aberdeen: Class 47 no D1916 on the Compass railtour in Platform 6 at Aberdeen on 25 September 2009.
Aberdeen: 66016 on the south end of the Compass Tours excursion waiting to head back to Crewe on 25 September 2009. Electical supply for the stock was provided by Class 47 D1916 on the other end of the train.
Aberdeen: 66016 pays a brief visit (about 35 minutes) to Aberdeen on 25 September 2009. It is seen at the head of the Compass railtour awaiting to depart on the return trip to Crewe.
Aberdeen: A Compass tours charter train from Crewe stands in platform 6 at Aberdeen station on 25 September 2009. Two-tone green class 47 no D1916 remains on the train as 66016 runs back through platform 7 in readiness to take the tour back south. There should have been two Class 47s involved but one had disgraced itself at Lancaster on the outward journey and D1916 had hauled the train (13 coaches and the dead Class 47) over Shap to Carlisle where the failure was removed and replaced by 66016.
Craiginches Yard: 66412 in Malcolm livery in Craiginches Yard, Aberdeen, on 25 September 2009, having arrived with a container service from Mossend. At the time, 66412 was being operated by DRS however it is now working for Freightliner.
Lancaster [1st]: The rear of Lancaster Greaves station building and probably the point where the tracks from Preston would have terminated. Former stable block still standing to the right but modern hospital buildings occupying much of the old track area. Because the railway was only here for a short period in the 1840s information is limited but the current occupiers of the building would be interested in any information about its history. Photo by kind permission of Morecambe Bay Hospital Trust Estates Department.
Aberdeen: Turbostar 170452 waits in platform 3 Aberdeen before forming the 1637 hrs service to Glasgow Queen Street on 25 September 2009.
Lancaster [1st]: The imposing frontage of Lancaster's first station, a Grade 2 listed building is unfortunately obscured by two leilandi trees in the front garden. After Lancaster Castle station opened this became a private house and then later part of the hospital. Photo by kind permission of Morecambe Bay Hospital Trust Estates Department.
Ferryhill Junction: 158727 travels towards Ferryhill on an ecs movement on 25 September, bypassing a 13 coach charter train waiting for a platform at Aberdeen. The Wellington Suspension bridge over the River Dee can be seen on the left.
Kinnaber Junction: Taken from a northbound train on 25 September 2009 looking south back over the site of Kinnaber Junction with the former Strathmore route formation in the low scrub on the right. Compare with John Robin's shot from a southbound train over 45 years ago, see image [[6950]].
Lochgreen Junction: 66714 (GB) 'Cromer Lifeboat' at Lochgreen south of Troon heading 4N50 1150 Lynemouth-New Cumnock empty MGR. GBRF have recently won contract for this flow. Trains started on 11th August and the contract is expected to run for eight weeks. Portland Golf course to the right of train, Royal Troon behind camera position.

Pickering: Barely recognisable without its distinctive smoke deflectors, the NYMRs ex-Southern Railway S15 4-6-0 no 825 stands at Pickering in September 2010. The locomotive had recently arrived with a service from Whitby.
Arley: Dusk settles over Arley station on the Severn Valley Railway during the Autumn Steam Gala in September 2010.

Plates, signs, notices etc: Extract from The Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory 1946-47 showing railway stations and their management just before nationalisation. There are quite a few omissions, including all of the Corstorphine branch. Notice that J Shearlaw was the Stationmaster of all three stations in the North Leith branch, though Junction Bridge and North Leith were so close together all he'd have to do was shout (well, nearly) if the mice were playing. By the 1970-71 directory there were just two entries: a Station Manager at Waverley covering four passenger stations plus Craigentinny, and an Area Manager (Goods) based at Leith South.
Newhaven: Part way through restoration/conversion into a small business centre, Newhaven station held a 'doors open' day on 25 September 2011. View across Craighall Road. See image [[22915]]
Ramsgate: A Southeastern terminating service arrives at Ramsgate from the south on 25 September 2011.
Pickering: (30)825 brings the 16.30 from Grosmont into Pickering on 25 September 2011. 825 is in fact an amalgam of 30841 and (30)825. The convention, I think, is that the number on the frames identifies the loco, so this should be the engine part or chassis of 825 and the boiler etc. of 841. There is a derelict engine (chassis) at Grosmont which could be 841.
Hexham: 156490 on a Newcastle - Carlisle service at Hexham station on 25 September.
Hexham: A Carlisle - Newcastle service passing below Hexham's SB gantry on 25 September 2011, soon after restarting from Hexham station.
Newhaven: Looking over the platform remains from the former Newhaven Station booking office see image [[36401]] on 25 September 2011. View is east towards Leith North and the docks. The large picture board shows a photograph taken from the same spot in the early sixties.
Ramsgate: The road approach to Ramsgate station on 25 September 2011, with the ticket hall dominating the skyline. This impressive structure, opened by the Southern Railway in 1926, replaced the former Ramsgate Town and Ramsgate Harbour stations see image [[21732]].

Hexham: One of the Edinburgh - Carlisle - Newcastle HST shuttle services operating during the September/October 2011 ECML weekend closures photographed approaching Hexham during the late afternoon on Sunday 25 September 2011.
Ramsgate: Immediately to the west of Ramsgate station is an extensive set of carriage sidings and sheds for South Eastern EMUs. In this view on 25 September 2011 the majority of the units stabled are class 375s with a 465 Networker and 395 Javelin standing furthest from the camera.
Llangwyllog: The overgrown trackbed of the former Amlwch branch north west of Llangwyllog in September 2012. View south east back towards Holland Arms. The branch was closed completely in 1993.
Horbury and Ossett: Stop car... jump out... quick grab shot of a trio of Deltics passing Healey Mills on 25 September. 55009 is opened up approaching Bridge Road overbridge by the former Horbury & Ossett station whilst hauling 55002+55019 back from the East Lancs Railway to the National Railway Museum at York.
East Croydon [Tram]: A no 3 tram for New Addington photographed at East Croydon on 25 September.

Liverpool Lime Street: Scene at Liverpool Lime Street on 25 September with 150147 at platform 2.
Birmingham International: Cable hauled Sky Rail car on the elevated link between Birmingham International and the Airport, seen from its sister unit travelling in the opposite direction. The cable systems operate independently so the cars don't pass at the exact same point each time. The maximum speed of 22mph seems much faster inside the unit.
Didcot Parkway: DRS 37688 Kingmoor TMD standing alongside Didcot station on 25 September 2014. See image [[48821]]
Wolverhampton: A first light view of the New platform at Wolverhampton (High Level) showing Voyager 221116, recently arrived from Preston, alongside London Midland 350249 waiting to leave for Northampton. The difference in height of the tracks in platforms 3 and 4 is very noticeable.
Bedlington: The level crossing at Bedlington North, just beyond the junction, in September 2014. The Morpeth line turns west beyond the signal box, with the route to North Blyth and Ashington in the foreground.

Gore Glen Bridge: An early afternoon southbound service on the Borders Railway photographed crossing the Gore Glen Bridge above the A7 on 25 September 2015.
Gore Glen Bridge: A mid morning train on the Borders Railway runs south through woodland near Arniston on 25 September 2015 heading for its next stop at Gorebridge.
Gore Glen Bridge: Looking south along a remarkably quiet A7 on 25 September 2015. The 1228 ex-Tweedbank 4-Car 158 combination is heading for its next scheduled stop at Newtongrange en route to Edinburgh Waverley.
Gore Glen Bridge: ScotRail 158867 has just crossed the Gore Glen bridge over the A7 southbound on a sunny 25 September 2015 with the 1224 Edinburgh Waverley - Tweedbank.
Vancouver Waterfront: An elevated view of Vancouver Waterfront Station on September 25th shows a variety of freight wagons and 5 sets of stabled West Coast Express push-pull double-deck stock. The latter will work the series of trains out to Mission City in the late afternoon. To the right, a driverless Skytrain unit can be seen entering the turnback siding prior to its next journey to either King George or VCC Clark from the adjacent Expo/Millennium line station.
Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal: A rare view of the DIRFT 'super shunter' on 25 September 2015 see image [[52516]] with a load in tow. That pile of containers on the left seems to be getting taller by the day.
Macclesfield: A southbound Arriva XC arrives at Platform 2 as a Northern Class 323 EMU departs for Manchester from Platform 1. Macclesfield is the location and 25 September 2016 is the date.
Macclesfield: A London bound Pendolino has just passed non-stop through Macclesfield on 25 September 2016 as it heads south.
Sheriffhall City Bypass Overbridge: Ex-LMS 4-6-0 46100 Royal Scot emerging from below the Edinburgh City Bypass on 25 September 2016 with the 0946 Edinburgh Waverley - Tweedbank 'Borders Line Steam Special'. The train is approaching the end of the double track section at Kings Gate points immediately below the camera. This was the last day of Sunday steam specials for the 2016 season.
Chelford: A pair of Class 150s, operated at the time by Arriva Trains Wales, passes Chelford on 25 September 2016. Although the destination blind states Manchester Piccadilly, the train has actually started there and is heading to Milford Haven. Quite a journey on a Class 150 if you were going all the way!
Berlin Anhalter Bhf: Berlin Anhalter Bhf, as left after the Second World War.
Macclesfield: A Euston to Manchester Pendolino calls at Macclesfield on 25 September 2016.
Berlin Anhalter Bhf: The portico of Berlin Anhalter Bhf, as left after the Second World War.
Chelford: A Manchester to Milford Haven ATW service has just passed Chelford station and is seen heading towards Crewe on the afternoon of 25 September 2016. It would appear that there has been a quick turn around at Manchester as the destination blinds on both ends of the train are still showing Piccadilly.
Chelford: A Northern Class 323 EMU on a Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly service calls at Chelford on 25 September 2016.
Knutsford: Knutsford station looking north-east on 25 September as a Northern service from Chester to Southport via Manchester calls at the station.
Macclesfield: A Cross Country Voyager departs from Macclesfield on a service from Manchester to Bournemouth in September 2016.
Koln Hauptbahnhof: The wonderful architecture of Koln station with a striking double decked red train setting off this view.

Borthwick Bank Signal Box: 46100 blasts under Thorniehill Bridge between Fushiebridge and Borthwick Bank with the last morning train to Tweedbank of the 2016 season. Contrary to appearances, the shot was not taken from the wrong side of the fence!
Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof: A Regio DB double decked train in striking bright red at Frankfurt.
Cowdenbeath: GBRf 66743 brings up the rear of the 'Royal Scotsman' as it approaches Cowdenbeath station with an Edinburgh - Aviemore private charter on 25th September 2017. 66746 is leading the train on this leg of the tour. A mineral branch once diverged to the left at this location.
Dunbar: 1633 ex-Waverley ScotRail train terminating at Dunbar.
Shanghai Hongqiao: China Railways. Shanghai Hongqiao. The sleek lines and new livery of the recently introduced 400kmh capable CRH400AF 'Fuxing' or 'Rejunevation' units. This unit has just arrived at Hongqiao with train G13, the 10.00 from Beijing South, 6 minutes early against the scheduled 4h 28m for the 1318km journey. 25 September 2017.
China Railways: 352 kmh: China Railways. From 21st September 2017, China Railways have speeded up the fastest (1 or 2 stop) trains between Beijing and Shanghai using new CRH400AF stock which is apparently capable of 400km/h. The new trains - known as 'Fuxing' or 'Rejuvenation' (or 'Renaissance') - travel up to 350km/h in service and have shaved just under 30 minutes off the previous 4h 50m 1318km journey (more than double distance between Edinburgh and London). It's difficult to get a seat on the new faster trains unless you book at least 3-4 days in advance. Train G13, the 10.00 Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao reaches a top speed of 352kmh (218mph) between Beijing and Jinan. In fact the train only twice reached and passed 350 kmh on the journey, with speed kept at a relatively constant 347kmh. 25 September 2017.
Shanghai Hongqiao: China Railways. Shanghai Hongqiao. The rear of train G13, the 10.00 from Beijing South, which has just arrived 6 minutes early at Shanghai Hongqiao. The train averaged 301.6 kmh (187mph) over the 1318km with two stops at Jinan West and Nanjing South against a scheduled average of 294.8 km/h (182mph). Given the train only twice actually reached and passed 350 kmh over the course of its journey for very short periods, the scheduled time of 4h 28m does not look taxing for the new CRH400AF units. The ride quality at 340 kmh plus is superb but this is in part due to the excellent track. 25 September 2017
Uphall: Milngavie (right) and Edinburgh services pass at Uphall on 25th September 2017. Unusually the Edinburgh train is only formed of three coaches so I've now got to leg it!
Uphall: An Edinburgh service enters Uphall on 25th September 2017. The proximity of the station to the M8 Motorway is clear. Uphall has no footbridge, and the road bridge is some way off to the west of the station. Consequently it must have the longest walk between platforms in Scotland.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: Current state of the Dundas Street entrance to Queen Street on 25th September 2018.
Glasgow Queen Street Low Level: The new exit from Queen Street Low Level to the High Level concourse, seen on 25th September 2018.
Coatbridge Central: DBC 66011 passes Coatbridge Central with a Mossend - Grangemouth transfer trip.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: The concourse at Queen Street is a light and airy place now following the demolition of the buildings outside. A Class 158 approaches the buffers on 25th September 2018.
Law Junction: A TransPennine Class 350 speeds away from Law Junction on a Glasgow Central - Manchester Airport service on 25th September 2018.
Carstairs: A DRS Class 66 hauls 68006 through Carstairs, possibly heading for Kingmoor, on 25th September 2018.
Bay Horse: The May 2018 timetable change has brought regular Class 158 services to the Furness line for the first time, running through to Preston and Manchester Airport. 158796, in a Yorkshire promotional livery, catches the morning sun as it runs south at Bay Horse on 25th September 2018.
Coatbridge Central: Freightliner 86604 and 88608 run light through Coatbridge Central on their way from Mossend to Coatbridge FLT.
Bare Lane: 68017 Hornet rolls through Bare Lane station with a single flask for Heysham Power Station on 25th September 2018. 68003 Astute is on the rear. See image [[37896]] for earlier flask power at this location.
Dunblane: A soon to disappear scene at Dunblane with two 170s forming the 0958 departure to Edinburgh on 25th September 2018 and the arrival of the 0849 all stations from Glasgow, which is overtaken in Stirling by the 0908 Glasgow to Dundee. Monday night seems to be Dunblane night for the electrification team with masts now appearing along the loop.
Law Junction: DRS 88007 nears Law Junction with the Daventry - Mossend Tesco train.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: Heading for the train at Queen Street on 25th September 2018.
Liverpool Lime Street: The two famous Lime Street concourse statues in September 2019.
Liverpool Lime Street: New CAF unit 195119 working between Lime Street and Manchester Airport on 25th September 2019.
Elgin East: They are back. The train of military vehicles that went south from Elgin for a military exercise returned there on 25th September 2019. The lorry in the picture was trying to line up the off-loading ramp but this was trapping the Freightliner class 66 loco.
Clunes: The weather in 2019 has been very challenging as regards taking pictures so I consider myself lucky to have managed some shots in late September. This is 66746 at the head of The Royal Scotsman on route from Kyle of Lochalsh to Boat of Garten. Pictured passing Groam Farm near closed Clunes station on 25th September 2019.
James Street: Personally I think the views of Platform 2 at James Street, (which is not normally accessible) are fabulous. The colours are constantly changing between green, blue and purple, all three of which can be seen here as the lights brighten and fade. I wonder if Network Rail have this sort of thing in mind for the proposed 'museum' at the Glasgow Central hidden platforms.
Girvan: Another view of the Girvan station building, with repairs to its leaking roof now underway in September 2020.
Girvan: The entrance to Art-Deco styed Girvan station in September 2020, shrouded in scaffolding while work takes place to repair the leaking roof.
Coppull Hall Sidings: An LSL operated 4-day private charter from London to Scotland, with 90001 'Royal Scot' hauling a mixed rake of carriages heads north at Coppull Hall Sidings on the first leg of day 1, 25th September 2020, from Euston to Mossend.
Bay Horse: 90001 'Royal Scot' heads the LSL operated private charter train through Bay Horse on Day 1 of a four day tour to Scotland. This leg was Euston to Mossend, on 25th September 2020, where two Class 37s took over to continue to Inverness.
Girvan: Girvan – Scotland's only station to be rebuilt in the Big Four era - is now receiving much-needed repairs to its leaking roof. A very worthwhile scheme on this special building, seen here on 25th September 2020.
Kincardine: Looking east from the level crossing to the former Kincardine station on 25 September 2020. The track was relaid in June 2020 in connection with the Talgo development at Longannet and proposed reopening to passengers.
Kincardine: View from Kincardine Bridge over the site of the old station, with new track laid in June 2020.
Tilton: If you go down to the woods today, you may find a body from a 4-wheeled van which last received works attention in 2005. Most of these grounded bodies are in worse condition than this one. (See, for example, image [[55603]]).
Tilton: You could explore the area of Tilton station - now a poultry farm - and never realize that this bridge support was there. It was built to support the main line end of a narrow gauge quarry railway. Stone was unloaded from quarry wagons to main line wagons by gravity from about fifty feet up - so a bit of a climb is required from the standard gauge trackbed to see this relic. Spotted (and explained) on a Railway Ramblers walk.
Kings Cross: Another UK Railtours excursion comes to an end as 67007 enjoys a well-earned rest at London Kings Cross after arriving from Shrewsbury, after a trip round the world and albeit 55 minutes late, at 22.55 on the evening of Saturday, 25th September 2021.
Telford Central: Colas Rail Freight 56096 passing Telford Central towards Shrewsbury with an engineering train on the evening of Saturday, 25th September 2021.
Clunes: 66746, in Belmond maroon livery, leads the 'Royal Scotsman' round the curve near Clunes on the way to Kyle of Lochalsh on 25th September 2021. Similar liveried 66743 was on the rear.
Lowesby: I fear that East West Rail has lost its bearings. This chalked aide-memoire is near Lowesby in Leicestershire, East of Leicester. The other parapet had East chalked on it equally clearly. I suppose it will be OK if they dont lay rails across the road.
Darlington's Siding: Returning from Chester to Carnforth on 25 September 2021, the 'Lune Rivers Trust' tour is seen passing to the north of the site of Darlingtons Siding with 35018 'British India Line' coasting towards Balshaw Lane Jct.
Werrington Junction: The start of the new Werrington dive-under, three miles north of Peterborough, seen from passing UK Railtours' excursion from Kings Cross to Shrewsbury, about to diverge left towards Leicester on the morning of Saturday, 25th September 2021. The new line will enable trains from Peterborough going on via the ex-GN/GE Joint Line towards Spalding without conflicting with main line trains on the ECML. Odd when you think that at one time the Peterborough to Spalding line was closed to passenger traffic but later reopened. Spalding to Boston closed at the same time in 1970 but has not been reopened. Passengers for Skegness now usually have to detour up to Grantham and change there.
Blists Hill Victorian Town: 1990 replica of Richard Trevithick's first locomotive of 1802 on the short demonstration track at Blists Hill Museum, near Ironbridge, on 25th September 2021. The original was built at nearby Coalbrookdale.
Telford Central: 158830 at the rear of a TfW service to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli, dividing at Machynlleth, and 170506 leading a West Midlands Railway service to Birmingham New Street, at Telford Central on the evening of Saturday, 25th September 2021. This photo was taken while waiting for UK Railtours' return excursion from Shrewsbury to London King's Cross to arrive, having taken the option to alight here earlier and join one of a fleet of coaches to visit the Ironbridge Gorge and Blists Hill Museum.
Telford Central: Exterior of Telford Central, on the Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton line, seen here on the evening of Saturday, 25th September 2021. The new town of Dawley was begun in the 1960s and was later renamed in honour of the engineer Thomas Telford. As the new town grew, it had to rely on two existing stations on the line, Oakengates and Wellington (indeed Wellington was known as Wellington Telford West for a time). Telford itself had to wait until this new station was opened on 12th May 1986, with platforms long enough to accommodate Inter-City trains.
Marefield South Junction: The South curve at Marefield Junction is in astonishingly good condition for a railway closed to passengers 105 years ago (the south junction was taken out in 1929 and officially closed the following year). View looks East if I remember correctly.
Kings Cross: The new roof added on to the west side of Kings Cross station, creating a spacious new concourse, seen here at 07.01 on Saturday, 25th September 2021.
Telford Central: 170512 at rear, with 170501 at head, departing from Telford Central with a West Midlands Railway service to Shrewsbury, on 25th September 2021.
Blists Hill Victorian Town: 1990 replica of Richard Trevithick's first locomotive of 1802 on the demonstration track at Blists Hill Museum, near Ironbridge, on 25th September 2021.
Loanhead: Modifications to the former booking office at Loanhead continue, with an extension now occupying part of the old station forecourt. View north from the adjacent public car park on 25 September 2022.
Havenstreet: Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Haven Street station in the afternoon sun on 25th September 2022. The railway has prospered and is well worth a visit. They have had a substantial investment from one of the National Lottery Funds and it shows.
Haven Street: IoWSR, J94 type, Austerity 0-6-0ST 'ARMY 198 Royal Engineer', taking water before leaving Haven Street station for Smallbrook Junction on 25th September 2022.
Havenstreet: One of the old Island Line Class 483 sets, formerly London Underground 1938 stock, now in museum storage on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

2012 | Smartcard to pave way for ticketless trains [Telegraph] | Transport ministers have been accused of paving the way for the closure of hundreds of railway ticket offices. The row was triggered by Norman Baker as he promoted the virtues of smart-ticketing, which would see passengers being charged the lowest possible fare for their journey. Mr Baker, the local transport minister, said rail operators were knocking on his door asking for permission to shut down ticket offices. Earlier this month Mr Baker accepted a request from London Midland to shut down four ticket offices, while rejecting closure plans for a further five. “There were some where keeping the ticket offices were indefensible,” he said.”On Southern only one third of passengers are buying their tickets at stations.” He believes the development of a new smart ticketing system, similar to London’s Oyster system, will protect passengers’ interests.
