A long way from the quayside! Gresley ES1 electric locomotive no 26501 stands on Kingmoor shed minus collector shoes and pantograph (not that they'd have been much use here) in May 1966. Both class ES1 locomotives (the other being 26500) were withdrawn from Newcastle's quayside branch in early 1964 following which they were taken to Hellifield, where the old shed was being used by the NRM to assess, store and refurbish potential preservation material. The photograph is thought to show a 'rejected' 26501 on its way back to the north east from Hellifield. She was eventually cut up by W Willoughby at Choppington, Northumberland, a short time later. On a happier note, no 26500 was later restored and refurbished and is currently a star exhibit at the NRM Shildon. (See 31971).
