Carlisle Kingmoor Shed: A long way from the quayside! Gresley ES1 electric locomotive no 26501 stands on Kingmoor shed minus collector shoes and pantograph (not that they'd have been much use here) in May 1966. Both class ES1 locomotives (the other being 26500) were withdrawn from Newcastle's quayside branch in early 1964 following which they were taken to Hellifield, where the old shed was being used by the NRM to assess, store and refurbish potential preservation material. The photograph is thought to show a 'rejected' 26501 on its way back to the north east from Hellifield. She was eventually cut up by W Willoughby at Choppington, Northumberland, a short time later. On a happier note, no 26500 was later restored and refurbished and is currently a star exhibit at the NRM Shildon. (See [[31971]]).

Polwica: Between Snieciska and Polwica, the Sroda to Zaniemysl narrow gauge line ran alongside a quiet country road on which Px48-1726 on the 06:07 departure from Sroda Miasto is overhauling a cyclist. Zaniemysl: While PKP 750mm gauge 0-8-0 No. Px48-1726 appears to be leaving Zaniemysl in May 1994 with an evening train to Sroda. In reality it was making a false start for the benefit of the cameras of a coach load of French tourists which happened to be passing along the road alongside the station yard. Shortly afterwards it will depart for real as the 18:20 working to Sroda Miasto.

Blackpool (North Pier): More future proofing on the Blackpool tram system. These points and crossover are intended to create the south to east chord of a triangular junction with a branch that will run along Talbot Rd to Blackpool North railway station. There were no funds for that at the time but when it is built the costs, and disruption to existing services, will be considerably reduced by the trackwork having been already installed. Flexity 010 slows for the North Pier stop on its way to Fleetwood in May 2013.

Restalrig Goods: Victorian confidence. It is impossible to imagine a prefabricated bridge today carrying any sort of provenance, let alone one as detailed as this. The bridge carries Lochend Road over the Leith New Lines at the point where the Restalrig Goods branch diverged. Although called a Goods station it actually just served a saw mill. The New Lines in turn went over the NB's Leith Central branch. Old photos of this area seem sadly lacking. King's Road Junction: The Leith South (or Docks) line seems to have fallen into desuetude. This is the point where it goes under Inchview Terrace, and we are looking towards the Junction at Portobello. King's Road Junction signal box was on the other side of the road behind me; the course of the short line to Portobello Power Station was lost when the road junction was remodelled then the power station demolished. Craigentinny Depot: Craigentinny wheel lathe is nominally part of Craigentinny depot, but is detached from it and is really in Portobello. Heriot-Watt University has been asked to carry out a feasibility study into opening ten miles of rail line that would allow passenger trains to run into Penicuik off the new Borders rail link. At least six miles of the potential route have been preserved as a rail corridor and already crosses the City Bypass, meaning the project could come in cheaper than early estimates of £150 million. One option being considered is for the rail link to connect Penicuik to the new Shawfair station being built on the 35-mile Borders rail route running from Waverley to
