Heralded by an announcement including exotic locations like Tiverton
Parkway and St Erth the daily Aberdeen to Penzance Cross Country service calls at Markinch on 29 January. It is less than 2 hours into its 13 hour 22 minute journey, Britain's longest scheduled service - in distance and surely also duration. On the wall on the right you can see traces of a large sign which said 'Markinch for Glenrothes' but after 'Glenrothes with Thornton' station opened in 1992 the 'for Glenrothes' was scratched out and the sign later removed. This is despite the fact that Markinch station is nearer both the periphery and the centre of Glenrothes.
