The Kirkcaldy Harbour branch, which closed in 1984, had an Alton Towers gradient of 1 in 21. Here is the course of the branch on 12 February looking downhill towards the harbour. The gradient is noticeable even on foot. No these aren't rails but a twin row of concrete kerbstones without a kerb. I can't explain that one.
