Millerhill Yard Up Arrival Sidings

'The opening of the Millerhill and Carlisle marshalling yards in 1962 and 1963 respectively had temporarily consolidated the role of the Waverley Route as a long-distance through freight corridor. You wouldn't see the ultra-new Freightliner container trains (one of the positive outcomes of the Beeching Report) passing through the Borders, but trunk flows of new cars and trucks from Bathgate, and modern cement and chemical wagons, were all part of the everyday railway scene between Edinburgh, Hawick and Carlisle.' [Excerpt from 'Waverley Route: the Life, Death and Re-Birth of the Borders Railway' currently being put together by Bill Jamieson, Bruce McCartney & David Spaven for publication in late 2011.] Photograph shows the north end of Millerhill yard in early 1963 with Newcraighall (Klondyke) Colliery dominating the background.
