This extract from the BR Scottish Region timetable 12/09/1960 to 11/06/1961 shows a sample of single fares from Edinburgh. The fare to Dundee is 12s 6d, or 62p. Those were the days, you might think, but in fact average earnings have risen by a factor of 39 since 1961, so that 62p is £24 in today's terms. The single fare in 2011 is £21.40. If there was a golden age when rail travel was comparatively cheap, this wasn't it. Could it be as illusory as those endless sunny summers and 'proper sized' Mars Bars?
