Whitrope Siding

The Waverley about to breast Whitrope Summit on 18th August 1961 on its journey from St Pancras to Edinburgh. The locomotive in charge is D19, one of the Leeds-based Peak class which had recently taken over this working from steam traction. The 10-mile climb from Newcastleton to Whitrope - most of it at 1 in 75 - was one of the most steeply-graded main-line sections in Britain.
