Amble

Looking ahead and slightly right is the line of the BR (NER) Amble Staith approach and return tracks. Crossing diagonally on the level from right to left is the line of the NCB (Broomhill Colliery Company) Staith approach and return tracks. The harbour is c. 300 m beyond the crossing point, much now obscured by 1970's housing. Coal exports ceased from Amble in 1969. Up to that time a pint in the Schooner Inn (larger building ahead and left) would have been far from quiet. Collieries shipping through Amble would have principally been, Whittle, Widdrington and Shillbottle (BR staith) and Broomhill, Radcliffe, Hauxley and Chevington (NCB Staith). Buckingham Palace burnt only Shilbottle Coal - allegedly.
