This blocked-up tunnel mouth (east portal, looking west towards Keswick Town in 2012) explained why the path was so steep on either side. There was a wooden walkway around the hill to the right - a slightly heart-in-mouth trip on a bike, in the wet! More recently, the tunnel has been excavated 79387 and again forms part of an easy walking and cycling route between Threlkeld and Keswick, the work also involving the reinstatement of several bow string bridges over the River Greta.
