The Eastern Valley line from Newport to Blaenavon threw out two branches in the Northern Pontypool suburb of Pontnewynydd. One went back South to Town Bridge; the other split in two to serve two collieries. Straight on in this view - loking West - led to Cwmnanntdu pit. The line to Cwmffrwdoer curved to the right, as this road through the Gwenallt Industrial Estate does today. Perhaps in consideration of potential pronunciation problems by visitors, the railway company settled on my favourite name for a junction: Branches Fork.
