Dolphinton [CR]: The former goods yard at Dolphinton (Caledonian) seen in 1997. This goods yard was laid out on a large site. The view looks west with the cattle pens, station, and connection to the NBR, off to the right. At the time of promotion of the railway there were coal mines in the Dolphinton area, closed by the time of the opening. So the slim traffic the two competing lines could have carried was already reduced before opening. The site is now housing.

Polton: The site of Polton station in 1997 in a view looking north east over the site, now occupied by houses. The route of the goods line to Springfield Paper Mills survived as a dirt path. This siding side-stepped the station, passing round the rear of the platform and station building. It was off to the left between the River North Esk and the houses. Several sleepers survive in place.

Lyne Viaduct: Lyne Viaduct seen from the south west in 1997. Since the photograph was taken the undergrowth has grown somewhat, a telephone pole erected and fence replaced by a dry stane dyke. It is a particularly fine viaduct with crosses carved deeply into the stonework, like that closer to Peebles ([[Neidpath Viaduct]]), presumably to keep a landowner happy.

Glasgow Central: Glasgow Central was built in the 1870's on the site of (and on top of) Grahamston Village, which although in the heart of modern day Glasgow was for long enough separate from Glasgow itself. When the Caledonian Railway built Glasgow Central, Grahamston was demolished. The only thing that marks Grahamston's existence is this plaque mounted at the top of the escalator at the Hope Street entrance to Glasgow Central. It commemorates the Alston Street Theatre which was Glasgow's first theatre (although at that time not within the city boundaries). This was erected as part of the Glasgow Theatre Trail, and unveiled by Rikki Fulton in 1990

The nearest of the two bridges carries the current NYMR south from Goathland towards Levisham, while the bridge in the distance is on the original 1836 alignment, much beloved of horse-power and cable haulage, prior to its closure in 1865 in favour of the easier route.

Ravenscar: The town that never was... Ravenscar, on the Yorkshire Coast, between Whitby and Scarborough. Much of the land was purchased in 1895 by the Ravenscar Estate Co, to develop a resort to compete with its well known neighbours. New roads were constructed, drainage installed, plots laid out and offered for sale in the new town. Special trains were chartered to bring in prospective purchasers to the station opened there in 1885 (then known as Peak). Unfortunately, the ill-researched project was a flop, with the development company going into liquidation in 1913, having changed the landscape forever, with its empty roads and occasional housing an oddity to this day. The photograph shows Ravenscar station site looking north towards Whitby in April 2009. Pontypool and New Inn: This location isn't as sylvan as it looks - there are two tracks of railway and four busy lanes of road under that concrete bridge. Now that the former Pontypool Road station building has been demolished see image [[9934]], and Crane Street station building removed, the only railway building left in the former 'Crewe of South Wales' is this station masters house, which was renovated in the late 1980s. Recent modifications have further changed the building's character, although the tile hung wall has obvious benefits when it rains.

Pontypool: The Eastern Valley line from Newport to Blaenavon threw out two branches in the Northern Pontypool suburb of Pontnewynydd. One went back South to Town Bridge; the other split in two to serve two collieries. Straight on in this view - loking West - led to Cwmnanntdu pit. The line to Cwmffrwdoer curved to the right, as this road through the Gwenallt Industrial Estate does today. Perhaps in consideration of potential pronunciation problems by visitors, the railway company settled on my favourite name for a junction: Branches Fork.

Big Pit Mining Museum: Not every preserved railway has doubled its number of stations in the last year or two. This recently-built halt is visible from Big Pit museum, making it harder for visitors to the former coal mine to be ignorant of the steam railways existence. Having said that, services from Furnace Sidings to this platform are usually diesel powered, whereas the main line service from Whistle Inn to Blaenavon High Level is normally steam - hauled see image [[47060]]. This is similar to the dual services from Lydney Junction to Norchard and Parkend on the Dean Forest Railway.

Big Pit Mining Museum: Here is a picture oozing with atmosphere, from the sleeper crossing in the foreground and the foundations of a demolished hut to the pit props waiting to be used underground. The dark horizontal line across the hills in the background is also historic. According to local legend, a large excavator had been shipped to Blaenavon in parts and built on site to do a job. Its next job was just a few miles South, so they used it to dig its own road along the hillside. This took place shortly after WW2 - presumably, the word remediation had not yet entered the dictionary.

Galgate: Nearly forty of the fifty Class 90s built are still working in 2017, with the remainder stored for various reasons. Freightliner have ten operational locos including 90046 and 90048, seen here passing Hampson Lane bridge between Galgate and Bay Horse with a Coatbridge to Daventry container train on 20th April 2017. Lochend Junction: The signal box of the onetime Lochend South Junction, later Lochend Junction, would have occupied the centre of this picture, with double tracks in each side. In the foreground was the cord linking the Abbeyhill loop with the Leith Central branch at Lochend North (to the right). There were various sidings fitted in too. Today the single disused track of the Powderhall branch remains.

Killin Junction: Killin Junction in 2018 looking across from the Oban bound platform to the southbound face of the island platform (the Killin platform was on the far side). Beyond the platforms is the former railway cottage, now restored. See [[82053]] for a view of the building in 1990.

Easter Road Park Halt: The gentle curve of Lochend Butterfly Way follows the course of the Leith Central branch through the site of short-lived Easter Road Park Halt (for the Hibs ground). It was not on the public timetable and consisted of a wooden platform and a sign! It was in a cutting which has long been filled in, but it was somewhere below this spot with its (arrivals only) platform on the far side.

Ledcharrie Viaduct: This is the underside of the eastern arch of Ledcharrie Viaduct. Looks like it had taken a beating. Those rods are fastened to old rails bolted to the side of the bridge.

Ledcharrie Viaduct: Ledcharrie Viaduct seen from the south. If it appears to be on a slight slope that's because it actually is. The ground rises to the right, the viaduct is on the long uphill slog from Luib to Killin Junction and on to Glenoglehead. In the background is Beinn Bhreac. This was a particularly scenic length of line, now lost, alas!

Monmouth Troy: It's always good to see young people using old railway lines, if only for impromptu social gatherings. An app of youngsters gather on the viaduct across the Wye (and Wye not, as Barry Norman might say) on the Monmouth to Ross line.

Bolton: With the WCML closed over Easter between Euxton Junction and Warrington (and north of Lancaster) Virgin West Coast and TPE rerouted some services via the newly electrified route via Bolton. 390042 runs slowly through platform 3 at Bolton with the 9M54 Lancaster to Birmingham New Street on 20 April 2019. This is believed to be the first Pendolino in passenger service to work over this route.

Monmouth Troy: Just off the Eastern end of the platforms at Monmouth Troy, the railway split to head for Ross-on-Wye (left) or Chepstow (right). The PW hut is original, the brick gatepost more modern. The viaduct on the Chepstow line is deteriorating rapidly, and should be visited sooner rather than later - so long as the steel gates at the station end are open!

Monmouth Troy: The description 'picture postcard view' hardly does justice to this wonderful view of the viaduct on the Monmouth to Ross line, seen from the corresponding structure on the Chepstow line in April 2019. I know at least one photographer who would have trimmed the trees in the foreground before taking this shot.

Usk: The goods shed at Usk was at a lower level than the station, and on the far (Pontypool) side of the River Usk. It was used as a garage; but as the garage now has new buildings, the future of the shed is uncertain.

Woodmuir Siding: Woodmuir Road, Breich. At one time crossed by the Caledonian Railway's Woodmuir branch and as can be seen, the track is still in situ at the level crossing. (The crossing was the limit of Caley ownership.) Looking west, the branch extended to serve quarries with a double reversal to reach what appears from the OS to have been the original Woodmuir Colliery (later known as Rashiehill Colliery). The later mine, some of whose buildings still survive, was on the east side nearer Woodmuir Junction. Track beyond this level crossing was gone by 1905 according to the OS although still connected on the east side perhaps retained as headshunt for the newer Woodmuir Colliery until it closed in 1963.

Hilton House: Hilton House (Halt) was on the Blackrod to Hindley line and closed in 1954 although trains passed through for a further fourteen years. The station site is now occupied by a landscape merchants, as seen here from across the A6 road which the line once passed underneath. There was previously a triangle of lines here serving nearby Scot Lane Collieries. Behind the camera a hotel complex covers the trackbed but beyond that a curving embankment is still in place running down to Blackrod.

Dicconson Lane and Aspull Halt: Dicconson Lane & Aspull was one of two halts on the short line from Blackrod and Horwich down to Wigan, via Crow Nest Junction. This also provided a by-pass of Bolton for through trains to Manchester via another line from just south of this point, which went under the Westhoughton line before joining the Atherton and Walkden line. See image [[76558]]. Dicconson Lane closed in 1954 but a dwindling number of trains continued to pass through until 1968. There were two platforms and the bricks, seen here near the top of the embankment in April 2021, are probably the last remains of the southbound platform building.

This Charles Holden designed station will celebrate its 90th Anniversary on 19th September 2022, opening with the first stage of the London Electric Railways Cockfosters extension from Finsbury Park as far as Arnos Grove in 1932.
