Cardiff Central: New order 67002 waits in platform 1 at Cardiff Central prior to departure with the 16.15 limited stop service to Holyhead via Crewe. In the event departure was some 20 mins late, as the service was delayed until dispatch staff ensured the driver, who had arrived late from the north, did not cut short his allotted break period. As the service was blocking the platform the 16.25 FGW HST service to London, ex Swansea, was put into Valley Lines platform 6, in turn impacting on those services.

St Helens Central: A Northern service from Liverpool to Wigan calls at the modern St Helens Central station on the evening of 19 April 2014.
Wyre Viaduct: A Colas light engine working from Doncaster to Carlisle on 19th April was routed via Copy Pit and Preston rather than the S&C. This brought the unusual sight of a Class 60 on the WCML (although they have since become regular performers on the Chirk log trains). Recently refurbished 60002 is seen here crossing the River Wyre on the six arch bridge at Scorton.
Nairn: GB Railfreight 66746, in its new livery for operating the Royal Scotsman tours, leads the train away from Nairn on 19 April 2016, with 66736 Wolverhampton Wanderers bringing up the rear.
Burntisland: Flowers at Burntisland station, courtesy of Floral Action Burntisland.
Gisburn: The former Gisburn SB, now devoid of lever frame, stands partially concealed by a tree to the south of the line, some way west of Gisburn station site [[18838]]. In this view from 2017 the building although perhaps in need of some paint, was at least intact.

Edinburgh Waverley: Wide view showing some of the serious construction work underway at the east end of Waverley in connection with the long planned Waverley Glen development. View from Regent Road on a surprisingly warm and sunny 19 April 2018, just as 380320 leaves platform 4 and heads for the tunnel with the 1043 to North Berwick. For an earlier view from the same spot see image [[9503]].
Edinburgh Waverley: View east from Edinburgh's North Bridge towards the Calton Tunnels in bright sunshine on 19 April 2018 as a train leaves platform 9 for North Berwick.
Edinburgh Waverley: Long lens view over the east end of Waverley station on 19 April 2018. The mid-morning scene shows the old track serving the short bays has been lifted and construction is now underway on the new platforms 5 and 6. Just visible peeking out from behind the south wall is the rear of the 1052 Pendolino for London Euston.
Scorton [Lancashire] [2nd]: Hard to believe from this angle but 88001 Revolution is hauling the northbound Tesco Express. Its a huge train but the first wagon was empty, hence the appearance of a light engine movement as it crosses Station Lane, Scorton on 19th April 2018.
Scorton [Lancashire] [2nd]: The 2C32 (M-F) Carlisle to Preston and the return service to Barrow are now Class 37 powered on Tuesdays and Thursdays only and the last one will run on 17th May 2018. 37403 Isle of Mull powers south through Scorton on 19th April crossing the low bridge over Station Lane.
Edinburgh Waverley: The rear of the Virgin East Coast 1000 Edinburgh Waverley - London Kings Cross about to enter the Calton Tunnel on 19 April 2018, shortly after commencing its journey south. The steep stone stairway above the trailing vehicle is Jacob's Ladder, linking Calton Road with Regent Terrace. At the time of the photograph the route was closed off as part of a long planned refurbishment programme.
Whetstone: The GC bridge over the M1 is looking a bit neglected; but so would you, after 49 years of disuse. View looks North.
Cupar: A poster for the latest exhibition in the museum at Cupar station: Work and War Horses 1914 - 1918.
Grindleford: A Pacer leaves Grindleford station and approaches the Totley Tunnel heading for Sheffield on 19th April 2019.
Dundarach Foot Crossing: 170450 leaves Pitlochry heading south and approaches the Dundarach foot crossing in April 2019. This was an attempt at a Then and Now comparison with image [[42195]] from sixty years earlier. Little appears to have changed but there is a newly installed colour light signal hidden behind the train.
Clachnaharry Swing Bridge: Clachnaharry is within cycling distance of my house, making this image possible on my daily permitted exercise during the Corona Virus lockdown. 37419 'Carl Havilland' and large logo 37401 'Mary Queens of Scots' approach the swing bridge with the test train for Kyle of Lochalsh on 19th April 2020.
Haymarket [Tram]: I'm not quite sure what it was envisaged that this loop west of Haymarket tram stop would be used for and there is not much sign that it ever is. When Princes Street is closed or otherwise impassable trams from the airport terminate at the next stop to the east, West End, where there is a crossover. View looks west; Haymarket's Platform 0 line is just over the fence. Photographed incidental to my daily exercise permitted under emergency Coronavirus legislation.
Walkden Low Level: This bridge carries Walkden Road over the trackbed greenway in Walkden. The LNWR Low Level station site is to the left in the cutting. The bridge ahead carries the surviving L&YR line and the entrance to Walkden (High Level) station is underneath.
Muswell Hill: View of the east side of Muswell Hill viaduct, looking north, on the former GNR Alexandra Palace line that almost became part of the London Underground Northern Line but closed to passengers in 1954, despite over £1 million being spent on the aborted electrification project before 1939. The viaduct now forms one of two separate footpaths on the trackbed, both known as the Parkland Walk, seen here on 19th April 2021.
Muswell Hill: View west through the main arch of the former Muswell Hill viaduct on the Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace line, with St. Michaels Church on top of the hill, framed by the arch, on the afternoon of 19th April 2021. This line opened in 1873 as a branch of the GNR's Northern Heights lines and but for WWII would now be part of the London Underground Northern Line but it closed in 1954 and is now part of the Parkland Walk footpath.
Raskelf: GBRf 66769 heads south on the up slow line as it approaches the former Raskelf station site, located immediately beyond the bridge the view is taken from. This was train 6H70, the 12.19 ex Tyne Coal Terminal to Drax Power Station loaded Biomass working on 19 April 2021.
Muswell Hill: View from the south end of Muswell Hill viaduct looking south along the Parkland Walk footpath on the former GNR Northern Heights line to Alexandra Palace, where it leans into the curve towards Cranley Gardens, on 19th April 2021. But for WWII, London Underground Northern Line tube trains would now be running along here and passengers would not give them a second's thought.
Linlithgow: An Edinburgh service pulls into Linlithgow on 19 April 2021.
Bowes Park: Track renewal work at Bowes Park on the GNRs Hertford North Loop, looking north on 19th April 2021. This line began life as a branch from the main line at Wood Green (now Alexandra Palace) to Enfield in 1871 with Bowes Park being added in 1880. It was not until 1910 that the line was extended to Cuffley and further extended back to the main line at Stevenage in 1918 to become the Hertford North Loop.
Muswell Hill: View from the north end of Muswell Hill viaduct, on the GNR Northern Heights Alexandra Palace branch, looking north, on 19th April 2021. The once double track bridge for trains has been replaced by a single width pedestrian subway. On the other side is the site of Muswell Hill station, whose derelict platforms, minus all buildings, I remember seeing in the 1960s, but it is now occupied by a school. Had it not been for WWII, the line and station would now be busy with Northern Line tube trains.
Walkden Low Level: This huge and high bridge carries the L&YR Manchester to Wigan (via Atherton) line over the trackbed of the Bolton Great Moor Street LNWR branch at Walkden. Walkden Low Level station was immediately beyond the next overbridge but has been cleared away. Walkden (High Level) station is a short distance to the left of the large bridge, which used to carry four tracks but now only two.
Walkden: 150114 leaves Walkden with a service for Kirkby from Manchester Victoria on 19th April 2021. The solum for the old fast lines is to the left of the train. This is the old L&YR station and was at one time known as High Level to distinguish it from the nearby, and now long closed, LNWR station. The still staffed ticket office is half way down the staircase,
Oubeck Loops: 60028, from DC Rail but in Cappagh livery, works a long train of box wagons north approaching Lancaster on 19th April 2021. These were being taken from Derby Chaddesden to Kingmoor. This view from Burrow Heights is a new vantage point (for me) but I have only discovered it as the fields behind the train are about to be built on.
Raskelf: A pair of LNER Hitachi Azuma 5-coach units, 801206 & 801203, head south on the up fast line approaching the former Raskelf station site, to rear of view, whilst working the 12.00 ex Waverley to Kings Cross service on 19 April 2021.
Roe Green Junction: Roe Green Junction was the point where the Tyldesley Loop line joined the Bolton Great Moor Street branch. The line to Tyldesley diverged left in this view, and the line on the right to Bolton climbs through Walkden. Both are now part of Salford's network of greenways on these old LNWR lines. Passenger services to Bolton ceased in 1954 but the loop line through Leigh to Kenyon Junction lasted until 1969.
Muswell Hill: West Side Story - a view down the west side of Muswell Hill viaduct in north London on the one-time Alexandra Palace branch, opened in 1873 and closed to passengers in 1954. The steps were constructed in the 1970s to give access to the trackbed when this was converted into the Parkland Walk between Muswell Hill and Cranley Gardens.
Blackrod: An Edinburgh to Manchester Airport EMU hurries through Blackrod on a sunny 19th April 2021. The old goods shed continues in commercial use long after closure to rail traffic. The Horwich branch originally formed a triangle of lines here from either side of the station. Electrification saw the station footbridge [[27961]] removed and the platforms extended but the line now has to be crossed at a nearby road bridge.
Walkden Low Level: Walkden (Low Level), on the Bolton Great Moor St line, closed to passengers in 1954 and all buildings and platforms were cleared. The trackbed is part of Salford City Council's popular network of old railway footpaths and cycleways. This view looks towards Little Hulton and Bolton on 19th April 2021.
Oubeck Loops: The Shap to Margam freight on 19th April 2021 was an hour or so early through Lancaster but was then looped at Oubeck for a succession of trains to pass. The last of these was a pair of 325 EPUs, seen here overtaking an idling, and slightly shabby, 66068 and its distinctive rake of wagons.
Walkden: The entrance to Walkden station in April 2021. This leads via two flights of stairs to the island platform with its surviving L&YR canopy. The ticket office is on a corridor between the two sets of stairs and anyone seeking to make Walkden more accessible will need an ingenious solution. The bridge on the left carries the line to Manchester. That on the right used to carry three sets of tracks but now just the Wigan line.
Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal: Just 13 days after my last picture [[76397]], and the day after the A5 was reopened after a 48 hour closure, here is the 30 ton prestressed concrete deck. There is a narrow (one truck size) underbridge on the East (right) side, towards the M1; embankments on both sides need to be completed.
Strand Road Level Crossing: Strand Road level crossing was completely relaid in March 2022, resulting in no rail traffic and a road closure, but hopefully ensuring the long term future of freight on the branch. Colas 56302 and 56049 leave the Preston Docks area (Ribble Rail) and cross Strand Road with the empty bitumen tanks heading to Lindsey Oil Refinery, Humberside on 19 April 2022.
Cameron Bridge [1st]: Looking west to Cameron Bridge Distillery on 19th April 2022. The trackbed of the Methil branch has now become a roadway, presumably to allow access to the steel bridges just up the line for remedial work.
Leyland: Main line Class 40. D213 'Andania' passes Leyland on a light engine move from Crewe to Carlisle on 19 April 2022.
Bamber Bridge: LSL 37s 688 and 521 pass Bamber Bridge with a Crewe to Alnmouth private charter, using what seems to be referred to as The Chairman's Set, on 19 April 2022. This includes some heavily re-engineered carriages with another, 'Moidart', of MkIII origin, further along the train. The charter ran via the S&C, Beattock and Edinburgh.
Strand Road Exchange Sidings: Colas 56302 and 56049 run round the train of loaded bitumen tanks that they have brought in from Lindsey Refinery (left hand road) and wait to draw forward before moving onto the empty wagons in the middle road, before returning to Humberside on 19 April 2022.
