Nowadays, visual departure information at stations is standardised with almost all coming from the same company, infotec.co.uk. In the past though there was more variety. This board at Newcastle Central in June 1997 is electro-mechanical dot-matrix, with no light source of its own and reads along the way, rather than 'menu-style' which is now the norm. The method of denoting buffet and restaurant services using number of blocks seems a little eccentric. Wouldn't it have been clearer just to say 'BUFFET' or 'RESTAURANT'?
