Leeds: A Liverpool - Hull Trans-Pennine DMU at Leeds in June 1972.
Leeds: Evening arrival from Kings Cross at Leeds in June 1972 behind Deltic 9017 'The Durham Light Infantry'.
Dunlop: A Swindon Class 126 DMU passes through Dunlop on a very wet 19th June 1974. The DMU is heading south on the former northbound track. Single line working had been implemented pending the lifting and relaying of the nearer track, which ultimately would be the remaining track until recent re-doubling. (Comment from Michael Laing; That's a Class 126 inter-city DMU. Note the headcode panels, white circle MU code and buckeye coupler.)
Stewarton: The old Stewarton station, photographed looking along the northbound platform towards Dunlop in June 1974. Single line working had been introduced by that time and lifting of the former southbound line was in progress with some removed sections of track stored on the redundant platform.
Apperley Bridge: Scene at Apperley Bridge on the ex-MR main line between Leeds and Shipley with The LCGB Fells and Dales railtour returning to Carnforth on 19 June 1976. Preserved Black 5 No 45407 + B1 No. (6)1306 are double heading the train.
Bungay: A westward view through one of the three road bridge arches at Bungay station in June 1976. This station had been closed to all traffic in 1964 and the remains seen here, including the bridge, were swept away in the early 1980s when the A143 was rerouted along the trackbed. The brick column visible is the former water tower base, the tank which used to rest on it having been salvaged for use at Weybourne on the North Norfolk railway.
Wharfedale Viaduct: The cow seems to be taking more interest in the photographer than the unusual combination of Nos. 790 Hardwicke and 92220 Evening Star. The train is the LNER Society Gresley Centenarian of 19 June 1976 passing Castley, just north of Wharfedale Viaduct, on the Leeds - Harrogate line. [Ref query 7616].
Hythe: Time for a rest and a cigarette at Hythe station, Colchester, on the morning of June 19th 1980. The gang had just finished re-railing this brake van at the end of a permanent way train. Earlier, after a run around from the locomotive via the points visible, the train was required to set back, and the brake van had split the points. The incident had occurred at just at the right time to ensure rush hour chaos on the Clacton/Walton to Colchester line.
Dawlish Warren: The 11.05 Penzance - Leeds photographed passing through Dawlish Warren in June 1982 behind 45076.
Eastfield MPD: 0400 on a midsummer morning at Eastfield in 1986. Loco 37018 (ML) sits in front of the Eastfield tool van, awaiting the arrival of the Fort William sleeper in the loop. The train will arrive via Springburn thus will have to be pulled down the hill to Queen Street from the rear as propelling passenger trains is frowned upon!
Wallyford: A North Berwick service formed by 305 517 calls at Wallyford on 19 June 1994. The new station had been open less than a week at this time.
Wallyford: First week of operations at the new Wallyford station in June 1994 as 305 519 calls with a North Berwick - Edinburgh Waverley service.
Newcastle Central: Nowadays, visual departure information at stations is standardised with almost all coming from the same company, infotec.co.uk. In the past though there was more variety. This board at Newcastle Central in June 1997 is electro-mechanical dot-matrix, with no light source of its own and reads along the way, rather than 'menu-style' which is now the norm. The method of denoting buffet and restaurant services using number of blocks seems a little eccentric. Wouldn't it have been clearer just to say 'BUFFET' or 'RESTAURANT'?
Colne: A large number of ex-Charterail demountable trailers being used for additional covered storage at the Penchem Chemicals depot in Colne in June 1997. The site was located a short distance from Colne viaduct.
Inverkeithing: The station clock shows 7.30am as a northbound Fife Circle train arrives at Inverkeithing on a dull and drizzly Monday morning in June 2006. On the southbound platform commuters are starting to gather for the next train into Edinburgh.
Inverkeithing: Coal empties north through Inverkeithing in June 2006. Inverkeithing South Junction and the branch down to Rosyth Dockyard can be seen towards the rear of the train.

Inverkeithing: EWS 66212 with Longannet - Hunterston (via Halbeath Sidings) coal empties coming off the Dunfermline line at Inverkeithing Central Junction on an overcast morning in June 2006. View north from Inverkeithing station.
Meon Valley Railway: Kingsmeade Road overbridge on the L&SWR Meon Valley Line north of Wickham.
Ashton Swing Bridge [Bristol]: The remains of Ashton Swing Bridge, in the old port area of Bristol on 19 June 2008. The bridge, which once carried both road and rail links, last swung in the 1930s and was last used by the Railway in the mid-1990s. Track still exists on the bridge but without connections at either end. The bridge is now part of a cycle track and walkway.
Exminster: Exminster opened in 1852 and closed in 1964 but the Italianate station building still stands alongside the Devon main line. However, the loops and signal box that survived long after the station closure have now gone. View towards Starcross and the coastal section. Map reference SX 954873.
Clifton Bridge: EWS 66175 heading light engine back towards Bristol along the Portbury branch on 19 June near the former Clifton Bridge station.
Oddicombe Beach: Although the cars perhaps look older the Babbacombe Cliff Railway dates from 1926 and the stations and this fine looking bridge are in Art Deco style. A car climbs past the ticket office at Oddicombe Beach station in June 2008.
Babbacombe: Spectacular view from a car descending to Oddicombe Beach from Babbacombe, on the outskirts of Torquay, as its sister climbs to the cliff top. Although slightly Victorian looking the cars have new bodies dating from 2006 as part of a recent full refurbishment of the line.
Oddicombe Beach: View from Oddicombe Beach up the hill to Babbacombe cliff top as a car descends towards the station. Using the railway avoids a road climb of 1:3. Further information about the line can be found at www.friendsofbabbacombecliffrailway.org.uk

Aberdeen: The Travel Centre within the refurbished north end of Aberdeen station on 19 June.
Ashton Swing Bridge [Bristol]: View across the former swing bridge in the old port area of Bristol that once carried both road and rail traffic - still showing rails in situ on the left, albeit last used in the mid 1990s.
St Gilles Croix de Vie: One of the stylish new SNCF DMUs, a four car set on this occasion, waits at the seaside terminus of St. Gilles Croix de Vie, before returning to Nantes. Although there are only a limited number of trains serving the branch the station is fully staffed and the building was undergoing refurbishment at the time of this visit.
Barton and Broughton: D1015 heads north with Day 1 of the Western Chieftain railtour from Bristol to Inverness. The Western had taken over the tour at Bescot and is seen approaching the footbridge at St Hellier's Place, north of Barton and Broughton, on 19 June 2009.

Carrbridge: D1018 diesel hydraulic Western Champion, held at Carrbridge on the evening of 19 June with the Western Chieftain Bristol to Kyle railtour, waiting to cross the Inverness portion of the Caledonian Sleeper.
Mauron: Because closed railway lines and trackbeds in France enjoy good legal protection against lifting and redevelopment it is quite common to see closed stations and disused tracks slumbering in the sun. Mauron, formerly on the cross country line to Ploermel, continued as a freight terminus after closure to passengers but is currently disused. The trackbed beyond the red barriers was being turned into a cycle track when I visited but, as can be seen, the station building has made a very nice house and has fared much better than another closed station at Cozes See image [[24390]]
Bo'ness: A smart looking 68095 at Boness on 19 June 2009. See image [[24705]]
Bo'ness: 55189 and 65243 on show at Boness on 19 June 2009.
Laurencekirk: 170 417 heads off for Aberdeen on 19 June after a stop at Laurencekirk.
Charing Cross [GC and DR]: 'Charing Cross: alight here for Mitchell Library and King's Theatre' says the sign. An older version, hidden in the gloom of the disused end of the other platform shows its age by adding 'Strathclyde Regional Council Headquarters': regions were abolished in 1996. 318 256 emerges from Finnieston Tunnel on 19 June with an Airdie service. It will come to a stop with the front of the train already in the next tunnel, Charing Cross. After that a very brief gap before Queen Street Lower Level station then... another tunnel. No wonder strangers think this is 'the underground'.
Glasgow Central: A power failure at the main departure board at Glasgow Central on 19 June and I'm sure somebody has been sent out for throat pastilles for the the station announcer who is is going literally non-stop. This couldn't have happened a generation ago: see image [[17775]].
Dumbarton Central: 320 315 arrives at Dumbarton Central on 19 June with a Balloch to Airdrie service.
Bishopbriggs: Not perhaps as collectable as a postage stamp with a printing fault, but the two new signs delivered for the platform extension at Bishopbriggs, seen here on 19 June, are in a non-standard typeface. ScotRail's font is called Officina Sans Book, with characteristic curves on some verticals, such as the top of the 'r'. I don't know what this plainer typeface is, but it's not the Helvetica still commonly found.
Scotstounhill: 334 016 with a Dalmuir to Springburn service at Scotstounhill station on 19 June 2010.
Broomhill: CR828 near Broomhill on Strathspey Railway.
Hayes Knoll: Recently overhauled Fowler 0-6-0DH Blunsdon at Hayes Knoll on 19 June 2010, standing alongside a traditional steam shed wheelbarrow arrangement.
Leven Viaduct [Dumbarton]: On 19 June a Class 320 on a Helensburgh to Airdrie service crosses the River Leven (one of three in Scotland) between Dalreoch and Dumbarton Central. At less than 600 yards this is the equal shortest distance (shared with two other pairs) between Scottish network stations. If you happen to know what the others are, your reward is your own satisfaction.
Carnforth: Looking at the locomotives stabled next to the station at Carnforth on 19 June 2010 you may think that DRS had opened a new depot, but the yard area around the former steam shed (latterly 10A in BR days) is still part of the West Coast Railway Company. Three Class 37 and four Class 20 locos are currently stored on the site in the shadow of the coal and ash towers.
Hayes Knoll: 4612 manoeuvering at Hayes Knoll shed on 19 June during a Swindon & Cricklade Railway Gala day.
Broome: Basic facilities at Broome, request stop on the Central Wales line and the last before Craven Arms. Along with Hopton Heath, Bucknell and Knighton it is one of only four stations on the line not in Wales. Broome was originally on a double track stretch of line but it was singled many years ago and, with only four trains each way a day, this is quite sufficient for the level of traffic. View north towards Craven Arms.
Bolton-le-Sands: With a slight heat shimmer surrounding it, a northbound Virgin Pendolino races along the straight approaching Bolton-le-Sands LC on 19 June 2010.
Carnforth: A Voyager for Birmingham New Street passes Carnforth on 19 June 2010. The WCML platforms were removed prior to electrification, resulting in passengers for the north having to first go south to Lancaster. Since introduction of the Virgin VHF timetable options for connections at Lancaster have been reduced and a lengthy detour via Preston can be necessary. The original station building on the WCML up platform here remains in use today as the booking office and a number of small retail outlets. The buildings on the platform between the WCML and Furness lines have been restored and now house a refreshment room and visitor centre.
Bauma: The Dampfbahnverein Zürcher Oberland (DVZO) has a number of preserved locos which work over the freight only SBB line between Bauma and Hinwill near Zurich. Steam loco no 401 Bauma is seen at that location, smoking gently away on Saturday 19th June 2010.
Armadale: The 'New Track construction train' photographed at Armadale on 19 June 2010.
Hayes Knoll: Woodbine, a pre-war Fowler 0-4-0DM from the Swindon tobacco factory of of W.D. & H. O. Wills, which came to the Swindon & Cricklade Railway around 1980. Photographed at Hayes Knoll on 19 June 2010.
Leyland: Well I wasn't expecting this! Memories of 40 years ago as the returning Lakelander charter to Birmingham International runs through Leyland on 19 June 2010 with WCRC 57601 on the front. On the tail on the way north had been a WCRC Class 33 but this had been replaced on the return trip by the recently acquired 47270 in BR blue and with 4 character headcode box still working.
Hillington East: Hillington East on 19 June 2010 as eastbound 334 037 arrives with a Gourock to Glasgow service.
Hillington East: The 'homely' ticket issuing arrangements at Hillington East. View from the footbridge on 19 June 2010.
Carnforth: Northern rail 144015 arrives at Carnforth station with a Leeds to Heysham Port service on 19 June 2010.
Falkirk High: Falkirk High has a frequent service, but its position between trailing junctions means it doesn't have a very varied one, with all westbound services going to Glasgow and eastbound ones to Edinburgh and only two different stopping patterns each way. The only slight variety comes from a few morning and late evening services which have extra stops. At 0812 on 19 June 170 433 pulls in with a Glasgow service which will call at Lenzie and Bishopbriggs.
Paisley Gilmour Street: 37607 about to pass through Paisley Gilmour Street on 19 June at the head of the Northern Belle tour from Chester to Wemyss Bay. The Northern Belle is normally hauled by a Class 67 locomotive, however, since these are banned from the Wemyss Bay branch DBS hired two DRS Class 37s to handle the train.
Bolton-le-Sands: Looking north towards Carnforth on 19 June 2010 as First Trans Pennine Express 185133 passes Bolton-le-Sands with the 1325 service from Barrow-in-Furness to Manchester Airport. Following close behind this unit was the 1208 First Trans Pennine Express service from Edinburgh to Manchester Airport. The two portions join at Preston for the final part of the journey.

Plates, signs, notices etc: A puzzling warning notice in a toilet cubicle of a Class 170 on 19 June 2010. As to what the danger might be I'll have to leave to your imagination.
Bolton-le-Sands: Looking south along the WCML at Bolton-Le-Sands towards Hest Bank on 19 June 2010 as 153363 approaches the level crossing with a service to Carlisle via Barrow and the Cumbrian Coast.

Balshaw Lane Junction: The message on the front of Virgin Pendolino 390052, beneath the name Alison Waters, reads Alstom - Supporting British Athletes. [Alison is a member of the British squash team.] The unit is heading south across Balshaw Lane Junction on 19 June 2011 with the 1058 hrs from Preston to London Euston.
Beattock Summit: A view from the B7076, which was the old A74 trunk road before the M74, seen beyond the train, was built, of EWS liveried 66090 held in the up loop at Beattock Summit in June 2011, on a lengthy rake of low side 4-wheel engineers wagons returning to Carlisle Yard. The rake appeared to be of all the same type of wagon, other than the sixth wagon behind the loco.
Greenville SC: Former Connecticut Department of Transportation F7As No. 6690 and 6691 pictured at River Junction in Greenville, South Carolina on Sunday, 19th June 2011. The locomotives were en route to the Greenville facility of Motive Power & Equipment Solutions, Inc. for restoration. See image [[39259]]

Heysham Port: A grubby Northern Sprinter, 150224, arrives at Heysham Port with the daily boat train that connects with the Isle of Man sailing. See image [[39282]] for a 1987 view of the same location. Since that time the station has been rationalised but lorry traffic through the port has greatly increased and the security fencing has consequently expanded.
Balloch: Platform scene at Balloch on a fine 19 June 2012 looking north towards Loch Lomond.
Heysham Port: Northern Sprinter 150224 arrives at Heysham Port to connect with the IOMSP MV 'Ben My Chree' seen here newly arrived from Douglas. See image [[34887]] for the same location in 1987, since when the track has been rationalised and the roof and side panels removed revealing the ships in the harbour alongside.
New Brighton: Part of the attractive concourse and station exit at New Brighton in June 2013.
Arnside: Having slowed to walking pace there is a tell tale plume from the exhausts of the two Class 37s as Arnside's home signal is cleared and the driver opens up the engines. The train is an evening DRS Sellafield to Crewe flask train.
Uig Pier: Calmac 'MV Hebrides' loads at Uig Pier on the north of Skye as it readies for its 1400hrs sailing to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris on 19th June 2013. See image [[65147]].

Redbridge Viaduct: The Waverley route looking south towards the Tweed from Winston Road, Galashiels, taken from the infilled bridge above the old trackbed in June 2013. The hiker on the left is ascending the access ramp constructed following conversion of the trackbed to what became a popular walkway linking Galashiels and Tweedbank. Re-excavation and replacement of the old railway bridge proved a lengthy and complex project, resulting in closure of Winston Road for over a year. See image [[49194]].
Lancaster: With a pounding beat from its three cylinders 61994 easily lifts the heavy Fellsman up the bank to the south of Lancaster station. The K4 makes this tough start from Lancaster station seem quite easy, which is probably why West Coast Railways have employed it again for the 2013 season.
Fountainhall: Scene at the former Waverley route station at Fountainhall on 19 June 2013. View is south over the site of the old level crossing. The boarded up station house survives alongside a number of more recent additions to the left as part of the Borders Rail project. See image [[6220]]
Kent Viaduct: Two DRS Class 37s bring an evening Sellafield to Crewe train, comprising five nuclear flasks, across Arnside's viaduct over the Kent estuary on 19 June. Within an hour of this photograph being taken the bridge was entirely standing in water and the notorious tide had covered most of the sand seen here.
Bowland: Scene at Bowland on a warm and sunny 19 June 2013, with demolition and removal of the old bridge deck now completed. See image [[49866]]
Horton-in-Ribblesdale: Half a mile north of Horton-in-Ribblesdale on a dull and overcast Wednesday 19th June, with The Fellsman running past hauled by 61994 The Great Marquess. The sun came out 2 minutes later... baahhh!
Heighington: Scene at Heighington on 19 June 2013. A train has just departed for Bishop Auckland, with another about to leave for Darlington. Meanwhile a small queue of pedestrians and a large queue of road traffic has built up at the level crossing. Heighington was busy during WWII, sharing with Aycliffe the flow of thousands of workers to the nearby ROD munitions factories. Now enjoying a new lease of life thanks to the expanding industrial estates of what became Newton Aycliffe.
Paterson's No 2 Siding: Looking north from a spot directly above Ladhope Tunnel, Galashiels, on 19 June 2013. The footbridge spanning the trackbed between Low and High Buckholmside stands in the middle distance.

Heriot: The former station at Heriot, as it was in the summer of 2013. At the far end of the old up platform stood the level crossing and beyond that the 1848 station building (which also once served as the village post office). Over to the right an Edinburgh bound bus on the A7 is about to pull into the stop near the junction with the B709 Heriot Way. The old building, level crossing, abandoned platform and road junction are no more. A pedestrian underpass is now located here ([[51465]]), while the B709 road has been rerouted a quarter of a mile to the south ([[75044]]).
Sassnitz Mukran Ferry Terminal: One of the electrified standard-gauge accesses to the Sassnitz Mukran ferry complex on Ruegen, seen on 19th June. The rail passenger service on this short spur from Borchtitz on the Lietzow-Sassnitz electric branch line was withdrawn some years ago, but a rake of four DB Regio coaches sits stranded to the right.

Sassnitz Mukran: There are no less than four separate sets of tracks into the Sassnitz Mukran ferry complex on Ruegen - this is the non-electric broad-gauge access serving train ferries to Lithuania and Russia, bereft of traffic on 19th June. Sassnitz Mukran is the largest railway port in Germany, with a total track length of 30kms broad-gauge and 60kms standard-gauge in the port and adjacent marshalling yard / rail works.

Grafenau: A typical scene from a German branch line today, with formerly extensive infrastructure replaced by basic fit-for-purpose provision, and loco-hauled trains replaced by single-unit modern railcars, in this case one of the widely-used Stadler Regioshuttle variants. This is the terminus of the Zwiesel-Grafenau line in the Bayerischer Wald, operated by Waldbahn (over DB Netz metals) on a one-train-working basis, seen here on 19th June.
Glenesk: A route training trip over the Borders Railway heading north from Tweedbank towards Newcraighall on 19 June 2015. ScotRail 158731 is approaching the former Glenesk Junction, passing the remains of the long closed Glenesk Colliery on the left.

Falahill Summit: One of the Borders Railway Newcraighall - Tweedbank driver training turns, seen here on the afternoon of 19 June 2015 on the climb south to Falahill Summit. The DMU on this occasion is ScotRail 158731.
Glenesk Viaduct: 158731 crossing Glenesk Viaduct on its way north on 19 June 2015 during a Tweedbank - Newcraighall crew training turn.

Falahill Summit: ScotRail 158731 southbound near Falahill Summit on the afternoon of 19 June 2015 during a Borders Railway Newcraighall - Tweedbank driver training run.
Loughborough Midland: 43064 is at the head of the 08.42 to London St.Pancras. Seven hours later, it was at the tail of a Southbound train in Leicester - presumably it had visited both Derby and Nottingham in the meantime. The 156 visible through the bridge is the 08.48 to Lincoln see image [[45162]]. Notice the low level platform ends.
Leicester Midland: I'll be off then. The guard on the 15.26 Flying Dutchman to Lincoln see image [[45162]] checks for any late running passengers before weighing anchor. The W H Smith bookshop just visible on the left has a lot to answer for. I bought Alan Williams' acerbic tome 'Not the Age of the Train' there about 1984 - this rather kindled my interest in railways - the rest, as they say, is history.
Nuneaton: Marketing 101 - this ticket machine at Nuneaton Trent Valley used to be locked up at night, behind the black painted doors on the extreme left. Now that it is accessible after 8pm, perhaps they will sell more tickets?
Leicester Midland: East Midlands Trains 156411 leans into the curve as it approaches Leicester on 19 June 2015 to form the 1526 'Flying Dutchman' service to Lincoln see image [[51810]].
Leicester Midland: 66148 pauses to change crew at Leicester, as it hauls empty cement wagons back to Ketton works.
Leicester Midland: I go back a long way with 56s at Leicester depot - though in the old days they were hauling out of Mountsorrel, rather than being sent back from France after being on hire. Nor were there electric locos (87s, I believe) stabled in the same depot. See image [[28286]]
Leicester Midland: Thirty years of progress in DMU's at Leicester in June 2015 - hopefully more evident under the skin than on the outside! The Meridian on the left is heading for London; the HST on the right - still a treat to ride in, despite the occasional strange smells - is bound for the East Midlands.
Killester: Killester station, Dublin, seen from DART train to Howth on 19th June 2016
Howth: DART unit no. 8123 at Howth terminus, Republic of Ireland, on 19th June 2016.
Bayside: Some of the stations on the DART system in Dublin leave a lot to be desired. This is Bayside on the Howth Junction to Howth branch, seen from unit 8123 heading to Howth, on the evening of Sunday, 19th June 2016.
Harder Kulm, Interlaken: View from a descending car of its counterpart at the passing loop of the Harder Kulm Funicular. This climbs steeply from adjacent to Interlaken Ost station, the canopies of which are visible top left in this picture. See image [[56012]] for the view of Interlaken West from the top station.
Dublin Pearse: Dublin Pearse station, looking north, on 19th June 2016.
Howth: Exterior of Howth station, now part of the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) system. on 19th June 2016.
Alloway Tunnel: This view was taken of the construction of the Dunure tunnel roof - cut and cover. Difficult lighting here confused the camera - hence black and white.
Wilderswil: Under normal circumstances the half hourly BOB trains, in both directions, all call at Platform 2 at Wilderswil, as seen here with 310 at the head of a service for Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. However, there is also an emergency loop which runs along the platform surface and could be used during disruption. A Schynige Platte cog railway train also waits on the right with the SPB depot behind.
Dublin Connolly: 29106 at rear of 29118 to Dublin Pearse at Dublin Connolly station on 19th June 2016
Interlaken West: Interlaken West station, seen from the viewing platform at Harder Kulm, accessed by funicular from Interlaken Ost. A DB ICE international service is just entering the station. Beyond are the carriage sidings and freight depot while alongside the station is the paddle steamer Blumlisalp at the end of the short canal from Lake Thun. The bright blue water is the River Aare flowing from mineral rich Lake Brienz into Lake Thun, just off picture to the right.
Newington [NBR]: OB 15 seen from the tiny public park at the corner of Mayfield Road and West Saville Terrace in June 2016. It looks to have been an aqueduct, but nowadays it is a pipe bridge presumably carrying water pipes. The cascading ivy has been removed see image [[55350]]
Interlaken West: A SBB train from Interlaken Ost to Bern and Basel negotiates the single line round the back of Interlaken and approaches Interlaken West station. Electric locomotive, 460-001 Lotschberg would be the first of class in the UK but that honour goes to 460-000 Grauholz on the Swiss Federal Railways. 119 RE 460 locomotives were built in the 1990s. See image [[25957]] for a predecessor at the same location in 1962.
Sutton [Baldoyle]: The derelict signal box at Sutton on the Howth Junction to Howth branch of the DART system in northern Dublin, seen from unit 8123 to Howth about to negotiate the level crossing before arriving at Sutton station, on the evening of 19th June 2016. It was from outside the station that the Hill of Howth Tramway pursued its circuitous route to Howth until closure on 31st May 1959.
Howth: DART train just arrived at the terminus at Howth, Republic of Ireland, on 19th June 2016
Gore Glen Bridge: ScotRail 158730 southbound between Newtongrange and Gorebridge about to enter the wooded area leading into the Gore Glen at Arniston on 19 June 2016. The train is the 0911 Edinburgh Waverley - Tweedbank.
Tara Street: Tara Street station, Dublin, seen from DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) train to Howth calling at the opposite platform, on the wet Sunday afternoon of 19th June 2016. The train will cross the river Liffey on departing and continue on viaduct to Dublin Connolly and then on through the north Dublin suburbs.
Gorebridge: A northbound train on the Borders Railway photographed midway between Fushiebridge and Gorebridge on 19 June 2016.
Dublin Connolly: Dublin Connolly station, looking back south, seen from DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit train) on right, calling before continuing north to Howth, on 19th June 2016.
Howth: DART unit no. 8123 at Howth terminus, Republic of Ireland, on 19th June 2016
Interlaken Ost: Interlaken Ost, as seen from a descending car on the Harder-Kulm funicular. Standard gauge lines from the west and metre gauge lines from the south and east all terminate here. The platforms on the left are standard gauge with stabling roads and service depot beyond. The metre gauge BOB line curves in from the far right of the picture past the blue and yellow stock. In the middle another metre gauge line, the Zentralbahn from Luzern, can also be seen dropping down from an embankment alongside the stabling roads.
Gorebridge: Approaching Gorebridge station from the south on 19 June 2016 is 158871 forming the ScotRail 0845 service from Tweedbank to Edinburgh.
Dublin Connolly: Iarnrod Eireann 29118, on a service to Dublin Pearse, arriving at Dublin Connolly station on 19th June 2016.

Dublin Connolly: Through platforms at Connolly station, Dublin, looking towards Pearse on 19th June 2016
Dublin Pearse: Dublin Pearse station, looking south, on 19th June 2016.
Wilderswil: The settlement of Wilderswil is on the outskirts of Interlaken and is seen here from the viewpoint at Harder Kulm, reached by funicular from Interlaken, on 19th June 2016. A BOB EMU can be seen curving round the airfield while running from Interlaken Ost towards Wilderswil, where the depot and station can be seen. Top right of the image a Schynige Platte rack railway train can be seen running alongside the BOB line.
Dublin Connolly: Iarnrod Eireann 02 2257 to Sligo (shown with the Irish spelling in the destination blind) waiting to depart from Dublin Connolly station, on 19th June 2016.
Dublin Connolly: DART unit No.8608, heading to Greystones, at Dublin Connolly station on 19th June 2016.
Grindelwald: A WAB cog train, having descended from Kleine Scheidegg, climbs out of the nearby valley and into the Grindelwald terminus. In Platform 1 is a BOB train for Interlaken, which will mainly use adhesion running but there are two rack sections on the Grindelwald branch.
Interlaken Ost: 460108 crosses the River Aare, which links Lakes Brienz and Thun through Interlaken, while working an express service that has just started from Interlaken Ost on 19th June 2016.
Dublin Connolly: Through platforms, Connolly station, Dublin, looking north on 19th June 2016
Halfway: A Great Orme tram (middle left) seen from the cablecar above Halfway.
Auschwitz II (Birkenau): The sidings outside the infamous Birkenau concentration camp in Poland, seen on 19th June 2017.
Hadfield: Northern 323238 approaches Hadfield on 16th June 2017 with a service that will quickly return to Piccadilly via Glossop. In the foreground a Harrington Hump can be seen providing level access to the 323 EMUs from Hadfield's surviving platform.
Mallow: Iarnrod Eireann 22 136 to Kent Station Cork at Mallow station, the junction for the branch to Killarney and Tralee, on 19th June 2017.
Llandudno Victoria: A Great Orme tram at Victoria Station, Llandudno.
Halfway: Great Orme, descending. Entering the passing place on Ty Gwyn Road, just before turning into Old Road.
Auschwitz II (Birkenau): Van with elevated Guard's accommodation, displayed in the sidings outside Birkenau concentration camp in Poland on 19th June 2017.
Swinton Crossing: Looking north west to the former Swinton Gatehouse, sited on the north side of the Gilling to Malton line between Amotherby Station and Broughton Gatehouse.
Beamish Open Air Museum: More than 140 years old, Lewin No.18, dating from 1877, is hauling a goods train at Beamish Open Air Museum on 19th June 2018. This was designed by Stephen Lewin of Poole, Dorset and worked maintenance trains to the dockyard and harbour at Seaham (and a long way from Poole) and though the harbour still exists, the line and its locomotives, apart from No.18, are long gone. No.18 has a permanent home at Beamish.
Montrose: Network Rail have fitted a set of guard rails round the basin at the station. Perhaps it's to deter the seals from venturing onto the tracks at high tides, I don’t know. That's 4A13 passing today, 19th, at 15:20 on its way to Craiginches.
Lancaster: Pullman liveried DRS 57305 and 57312 catch the morning sun as they cross Carlisle Bridge in Lancaster working from Crewe to Sellafield on 19th June 2018. The morning train is usually formed of Class 68s hauling flasks but this was a light engine movement using that path.
Eskbank: A Borders Railway service enters Eskbank on 19 June 2018.
Preston: From the May 2018 timetable change bay platform 4C at Preston sees regular use with hourly trains from East Lancashire terminating here and then forming Ormskirk services. However, 19th June 2018 being a day of strike action on Northern, 142040 arrived from Burnley and was promptly switched off. 156426 left for Manchester Airport at the head of a six-coach train.
Stirling: Scotrail 170405 seen at Stirling on 18th June 2018. Note the removal of the canopy valance boards as part of a station improvement project. (I hope they go back on in due course). The footbridge to platforms 9 &10 is to be removed restored and refitted.
Montrose: Virgin Trains EC HST seen at Montrose Basin on 19th June 2018. 43227 was leading with 43367 at the rear.
Aberfoyle: Looking east over Manse Road in Aberfoyle towards the former station and goods yard. The quarry tramway passed through the gap in the hedge and steel gateposts survive in the shrubbery. 19th June 2018.
Woodacre Crossing: Grrr!! A few minutes earlier this field at Woodacre had been bathed in setting sunlight, which would have illuminated the new EMU beautifully. However, a cloud came along just before 331109, which was testing between Carnforth and Preston. The latest report is that some of the new Class 195 and Class 331 CAF trains will enter Northern passenger service on 1st July 2019.
Strathpeffer [2nd]: The fully restored ex-Highland Railway station at Strathpeffer, dating from 1885, on 18th June 2019. Closed to passengers in 1946 and completely in 1951, the restoration houses a cafe, a tourist office and the Highland Childhood Museum while the former telegraph office is now a bookshop. All this but, alas, no trains. The trackbed east to Dingwall seems to be in a reasonable condition, a narrow gauge tourist steam railway on the trackbed for a mile or two would be a nice idea.
Haymarket [Tram]: I'd never seen this loop used and have wondered what it was for. Well, on this occasion at least it seemed to be used for stabling. There were driving lights at both ends (which I wouldn't have thought possible) and no driver at either of them.
Granton Pier: It doesn't seem to have been thought worthwhile to remove this remnant of the railways of Granton and tar the area over. Either that or it has been left as a memorial. View looks towards the end of the middle pier.
Haymarket: Rail replacement car service? ScotRail vehicle seen at the lights at Haymarket on 19 June 2021. The strapline will become literally true when nationalisation comes.
Wamphray: A northbound Pendolino is about to pass over Station Road bridge at Wamphray on 19 June 2021. The former station building is still in existence, as a private house, out of view to the left.
Kells [County Kerry]: Farranfore to Valencia Harbour Branch. The former Kells Station survives in remarkably good condition with both platforms and the station building intact. The station master's house and the signal box also survive despite closure in 1960. View looks toward Mountain Stage, Glenbeigh and Killorglin in June 2021.
Norbreck North [Tram]: Millennium tram 718, a rebuilt Balloon car, was further modified with widened doors when the Blackpool tramway was modernised. For several years it was in the white and purple livery of the new Flexity trams but is now in more traditional cream and green. On Saturday 19th June 2021, 718 was being used on regular services (rather than Heritage tours) and is seen here calling at Norbreck North while running between Pleasure Beach and Little Bispham to supplement Flexity trams running the full length of the tramway.
Lockerbie: GBRF 66704 hauls the empty Castle Cement tanks from Mossend to Carlisle on the afternoon of Saturday 19 June 2021. The train is seen about a mile south of Lockerbie and will go forward to Clitheroe via the S&C on Monday.
Glenbeigh: Farranfore to Valencia Harbour Branch. Glenbeigh Signal Box survives in good condition in 2021, although I am not sure about the colour scheme! The surviving station buildings can just be seen beyond in this view, from the former level crossing, looking eastwards towards Killorglin. The line closed in early 1960.
Edinburgh Waverley: The 1052 to London Euston gets the Right Away from Waverley's Platform 8 on 19 June 2021.
Thankerton: A southbound AWC Pendolino rushes past Thankerton on 19 June 2021. The former station building (white), now a private house, can be seen above the 3rd coach.
Bispham [Tram]: Although it is over eighty years old, Blackpool Balloon 711 is still in front line service and on 19th June 2021 was supplementing the modern Flexity fleet on the central section of the route, seen here calling at Bispham. Modifications to 711 however, (disfigurements?) such as livery, bus style windows, widened doors, removal of skirts and guards have not improved its appearance. See image [[63931]] for the classical original style.
Kells [County Kerry]: Farranfore to Valencia Harbour Branch. Close up of the former Kells signal box, in June 2021, with train lamps visible inside. The site here is well used with community recycling facilities and the South Kerry Greenway from Glenbeigh to Cahirciveen will bring the trackbed back to life in the relatively near future following the failure of ill-conceived court cases by landowners and environmentalists to halt this valuable project, which will help to boost the local economy just as other Irish Greenway developments have done.
Symington [2nd]: DRS 66304 passes milepost 66 and three quarters at Symington on 19 June 2021 whilst on a LE move from Carlisle to Millerhill.
Bispham [Tram]: The extended entrances on newly repainted Millennium tram 707 are very evident in this view of it approaching Bispham from the north on Saturday 19th June 2021. These allow use on regular services calling at all the new raised tram platforms on the system. Trams without these modifications can only call at ground level heritage stops. The centre road and pointwork at Bispham allow overtaking and turn back movements.
Thankerton: The Daventry to Mossend container service, hauled by 88005, approaches Thankerton on 19 June 2021.
Norbreck [Tram]: Blackpool Balloon 715 returns from Fleetwood during a Heritage Tour from Pleasure Beach, seen passing the stop at Norbreck on 19th June 2021.
York Place [Tram]: Tram 252 heads west from the former terminus at York Place - still the end of the line - running empty to the temporary terminus at St Andrew Square on 19 June 2022.
Bury Castlecroft Goods: The weekend of 18th/19th June 2022 was a LYR/LNWR Amalgamation Gala. A cameo of shunting in Castlecroft Yard involved LYR Pug No 19 and the wagon has a chalked message, loaded with 100 sacks of barley!
York Place [Tram]: Tram 254 at the former York Place tram stop, about to return empty to the temporary terminus at St Andrew Square, on 19th June 2022.
