New posters at Livingston North from station adopter the Museum of the Scottish Shale Oil Industry at Almond Valley Heritage evoke the transition from pits to trenches as the industry went to war. They recall workers who gave their lives for their country in the Great War, while others kept production going of the motor spirit, diesel oil and candles vital for the war effort. The shale-oil industry also produced heavy oil that fuelled much of the British Navy, while ammonium sulphate yielded as a by-product from shale was used in the production of explosives.
