Bealings

During the last summer of Saturdays Only London – Lowestoft trains for holidaymakers, a Class 47 hauled down working streaks across the level crossing at Bealings on the East Suffolk line. The photo was taken from the signal box window ledge on 20th August 1983. The crossing keeper was wary of some train drivers speeding on this stretch of line, having once watched his gates being “gone through” after his signals were overrun. The box was abolished the following Spring and the gates replaced by lifting barriers. [Ref query 6339]
