Newcastle Central

Stopping for a spell! B1 4-6-0 61019 stands alongside the platform at Newcastle Central with a freight in June 1963. The locomotive was delivered new to Heaton shed in February 1947 carrying the name 'Nilghai'. Unfortunately, whichever book of antelope names was used by Darlington Works got this one wrong, as the correct spelling for the large Indian antelope is 'Nilgai', although in Asia it can sometimes be spelt Nilgau. Just to complicate matters, many of the Ian Allan locomotive listings of the 1950s and 60s used the spelling 'Nilghal'.
