For 100 years, from 1882 to 1982, up carriages from Clacton and Walton were combined at Thorpe le Soken station for forward travel to London. In the down direction, trains were correspondingly divided. This photo, dating from 28th August 1978, shows the supervised coupling of the two London bound portions at Thorpe le Soken, the Walton portion being in the rear nearest the camera. The original platform 1 fell into disuse when this practice stopped.
