During the 1959/60 period Annesley's allocation of 76 locomotives included no less than 31 of the big 2-10-0s. Borthwick Bank Signal Box: The signal box at Borthwick Bank had closed on 7th July 1968 following closure of the coup and all sidings and associated trackwork had been removed. However, during demolition of the Waverley Route I was told that a temporary yard had been laid in at Borthwick Bank where recovered track panels could be dismantled so on Saturday 28th August 1971 I made my way there to find out. Sure enough, the main line had been singled and a number of sidings put down. The view shows plant and equipment together with wagons loaded with recovered material. I also got a shock when without warning an 08 shunter appeared from the south and trundled through without stopping. There were also quite a few folk crammed into the cab! I presumed it was heading for Millerhill to be changed over or serviced.

Witham: The end of the line….. Following final closure of the Maldon-Witham line in 1966, a half mile length was retained at the Witham end to serve the Rom River factory. This is the rural setting of the end of that stub, well beyond the factory siding, in 1977. The pasture to the left was transformed into a dense housing estate by 1980 and this buffer stop ended its days amidst suburbia.
Witham: Further to Ken Strachan's picture of the Witham-Maldon line trackbed today see image [[26138]], here is the corresponding scene from approximately the same spot on 28th August 1977. The road bridge is the point of comparison. The sign on the left warns industrial rail traffic from the Rom River factory beyond the bridge that it must not pass through the gates (behind the photographer) that mark the beginning of British Rail jurisdiction.
Thorpe le Soken: August Bank Holiday Monday 1978 finds Thorpe le Soken the focus of much human activity, not all of it train related. The approach road hosts a special holiday market. Locals attracted by the event wait to return down the line to Clacton/Walton, most having been less than enthused by a few racks of not so special secondhand clothes and an ice cream van.
Thorpe le Soken: For 100 years, from 1882 to 1982, up carriages from Clacton and Walton were combined at Thorpe le Soken station for forward travel to London. In the down direction, trains were correspondingly divided. This photo, dating from 28th August 1978, shows the supervised coupling of the two London bound portions at Thorpe le Soken, the Walton portion being in the rear nearest the camera. The original platform 1 fell into disuse when this practice stopped.

Newcastle Central: Class 45 No.83 working 1V93 0940 Edinburgh to Plymouth service seen at Newcastle Central on 28th August 1983. In later years, when the HST were introduced to the East Coast, this service was often Deltic hauled but not in 1972. Down in Devon this was always a interesting train. How late would it be? As it was long distance it could have its moments. In reverse it was 1S27, 0730 or thereabouts from Plymouth to Edinburgh.

Old Kilpatrick: Old Kilpatrick Map of 1922 showing CR line at Old Kilpatrick and NBR alternative route which included Kilpatrick Station. My working life started in the Dunbarton County Architects Office in Ferry Road next to the, by then, closed station. The line had become a branch by then and there was a wagon repair facility next to our offices, the end of the branch line.
Dalmuir: Dalmuir Map of 1922 showing NBR lines in Dalmuir including Dalmuir Riverside Station, next to which was the Beardmore Factory which was variously a ship builders, ship breakers and railway wagon breakers.
Renfrew: Map of 1909 to 1934 showing lines in Yoker and Renfrew.
Anniesland: Anniesland Map of 1914 showing lines in Anniesland, Kelvinside and Jordanhill. Note - Great Western Road Station rather than Anniesland.
Bathgate STVA Aborted Siding: View east from the B792 Blackburn Road overbridge as a 158 approaches Bathgate on 28 August. The train is about to pass a set of points installed to provide access to the new STVA car terminal, a project that appears to have been put on hold for the time being.
Milngavie: Milngavie Map of 1922 showing NBR lines at Milngavie and Burnbrae including to paper works and to Burnbrae Dye Works. Branch to Burnbrae Dye Works had Bennie Railplane test track built over it.
Linlithgow: 170 410 approaching Linlithgow on 28 August with a Glasgow Queen Street - Edinburgh Waverley service.
Scarborough: A terminated TransPennine service from Liverpool Lime Street recently arrived at Scarborough on the morning of 28 August 2008.
Bodmin General: Ex-GWR 2-8-0 tank no 4247 at Bodmin General on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway in August 2008.
Bathgate Shed: Rear view of the old 64F Bathgate shed on 28 August 2009, with demolition imminent.
Bo'ness: Preserved and restored ex-LNER class D49 no 246 Morayshire stands alongside the water tank at Boness on Friday 28th August 2009.
Livingston North: The new pedestrian approaches to Livingston North station are almost complete as seen in this view looking west on 28 August 2009. I found the scene strangely reminiscent of Robin Barbour's 1959 photograph looking over the livestock pens at Oliver's auction mart in Hawick. See image [[23300]]
Drumgelloch: Looking south west over work currently in progress in connection with the new Drumgelloch station development on 28 August 2009. The replacement will be some 550m east of the current version (off picture in the right background) and will encompass the site of the former Clarkston (Lanarks) station (out of shot to the left). The view is approximately midway between the two, taken from the west end of Katherine Street, looking towards Old Bore Road (I took no offence at this). The new development will include dual platforms, a footbridge, lifts and new road access, with parking for over 330 cars.
Westcraigs: Significant flooding affecting the trackbed running through bridge 38 at Westcraigs on 28 August 2009. View is west towards Forrestfield where work is in progress in the distance.
Livingston North: ScotRail 158732 about to depart from the westbound platform at Livingston North on 28 August 2009 with a sevice from Waverley heading for Bathgate. No signs of the forthcoming electrification at this stage.
Bathgate: Photograph taken looking east from the pavement alongside the old Bathgate shed (just off picture to the right) on 28 August 2009. On the left is the A89 Edinburgh Road while over to the right a train has just left the current Bathgate terminus and is running alongside recently erected electrification masts on its way to Waverley. Between the road and the railway is part of the area currently being cleared in preparation for the construction of the new station, car parking, access roads and associated infrastructure.
Westcraigs: The surviving platform and station house of Westcraigs station on the closed Airdrie - Bathgate line photographed on 28 August 2009. View is west towards bridge no 38, which carries Station Road over the trackbed. Opened in 1862, it was referred to as Westcraigs for Harthill in some timetables, although the proposed new station to be built half a mile east of here would be named Blackridge.
Bescar Lane: A Southport to Manchester service has just arrived at Bescar Lane as the level crossing barrier starts to open on 26 August 2009. Although both platforms used to be on the east side of the crossing, today the down platform (from where the photograph was taken) is now on the west side.
Westcraigs: Site of the former Westcraigs station in West Lothian, situated just over 2 miles west of Armadale on the Airdrie - Bathgate route. The line closed to all traffic in 1982 with the old trackbed later being turned into a public walkway (see image [[9677]]). Photograph taken looking east in August 2009, by which time preliminary work was underway on the Airdrie - Bathgate reopening project, with walkways having been commandeered for movement of construction equipment and materials.
Westcraigs: Entrance to the former Westcraigs station, West Lothian, on 28 August 2009. View north from Station Road showing the old station house, with the remains of the westbound platform just beyond and the site of the goods yard off picture to the left. For the view from the other side of the trackbed on the same day see image [[25344]].
Bathgate Shed: The remains of Bathgate shed seen looking south west from Edinburgh Road on 28 August 2009. Final demolition to make way for the northern section of the new Bathgate station car park took place 2 weeks later see image [[25412]].
Westcraigs: Scene at the former Westcraigs station at the end of August looking west along the remaining platform towards bridge no 28. This area is currently (November/December 2009) seeing considerable activity with the bridge squad having recently moved on from the B8084 road bridge at Armadale (road now reopened) to the B718 rail bridge just behind the camera (road now closed).
Bathgate Shed: The end is nigh. View between the advertising hoardings fronting Edinburgh Road on 28 August 2009, showing part of the remaining skeleton of Bathgate locomotive shed almost ready for demolition. The coup de grace was finally administered 2 weeks later (See image [[25412]]).
Armadale: Sneaking back onto the works site after an extra long lunch break in the local hostelry..? Construction activity alongside Station Road, Armadale on 28 August 2009. View is north east from the B8084 road bridge along the trackbed towards Bathgate.
Clarkston (Lanark): The old bridge on the eastern edge of Airdrie carrying Towers Road over the trackbed. The bridge, seen here looking south east on 28 August 2009, has been closed for some time in connection with work on the Airdrie - Bathgate project, with its replacement due to open in June 2010. The metal barrier on the extreme right of the photograph is part of the perimeter fence around an electricity sub station that now stands on the spot once occupied by the eastbound platform building of Clarkston (Lanark) station, closed in 1956. See image [[20208]]
Livingston North: The 1024 Bathgate - Waverley service, formed by 158732, photographed on 28 August 2009 standing amongst the myriad of miscellaneous metalwork that has appeared around Livingston North station see image [[70335]].
Livingston North: The 0948 Edinburgh - Bathgate 158 service pulls away from the recently commissioned westbound platform at Livingston North on 28 August 2009.
Forrestfield: Activity on the Airdrie-Bathgate section on 28 August 2009. Looking along the trackbed towards Blackridge from the A89 overbridge just east of Forrestfield station.
Drumgelloch [1st]: Work in progress at Drumgelloch terminus on 28 August 2009. The bridge that carried Crowwood Drive over the trackbed at the east end of the station has now been demolished. See image [[21893]]
Caldercruix: Ongoing site preparation at Caldercruix on 28 August with the old platforms and the former lineside housing to the south now demolished See image [[21918]]. View west from Main Street road bridge towards Drumgelloch.
Bathgate LMD: The 1054 Bathgate - Edinburgh heads east on 28 August 2009.
Bathgate Shed: Out with the old. The 1124 Bathgate - Edinburgh passes the former Bathgate yard and shed on 28 August 2009.
Haymarket: 322 483 would have left Shields Depot early on the morning of 28 August 2010 to form the 0702 from Glasgow Central to North Berwick, seen here at the Haymarket stop. The unit will then handle services between North Berwick and Edinburgh for the rest of the day, supplementing the sets stabled at Waverley. Meantime, work progresses at Haymarket on the installation of lifts to serve platforms 2, 3 and 4 which, perhaps surprisingly for such a busy station, have no disabled access.
Challow: During the evening of Saturday 28 August 2010, no 6024 King Edward 1 stops to take on water in the loops near the site of Challow station (closed 1964) between Didcot and Swindon. The ex-GWR 4-6-0 was at the head of a Paddington - Bristol 'Bristolian' special.
Carstairs East Junction: An Edinburgh-bound Virgin Voyager between Carstairs South and East Junctions on 28 August 2010. Photograped from a Glasgow Central - North Berwick Class 322, halted at signals east of Carstairs station to let it pass.
Challow: 6024 King Edward 1 stopped for water in the loops near the site of Challow station on 28 August 2010. The locomotive was on its way from Paddington to Bristol on the GWR Mainline with an evening Bristolian special.
Maldon: Above is the sad sight of Maldon station in October 2010 see image [[35920]] seriously damaged by fire a year previously. Below is the station fully rebuilt on 28 August 2011, the official re-opening date.
Spurn Point: Track crossing the south end of the undamaged north section of the causeway to Spurn Point showing the extent of land erosion here. Spurn Point lighthouse can be seen across the water.
Spurn Point: Double track section opening out and sited off the south end section of the causeway to Spurn Point by the lighthouse, running, behind the camera, to what is thought to be the site of a two road engine shed.
Maldon: J541 had been superseded in use on the Victorian Goldfields Railway by K160, an earlier design of 2-8-0, built at the Newport Workshops of VR in 1940.
Spurn Point: Southern most extant track section of the former Spurn Head military railway located between the visitor car park and the RNLI Humber Lifeboat Crew 'village' at Spurn Head.
Garstang Town: Garstang in August 2012. At the bottom of the picture the A6 still climbs to cross the route of the Garstang and Knot End Light Railway. The course of this can be seen from the air running dead straight through the housing area and out into the open fields before eventually curving right at the top of the picture to run alongside the West Coast Main Line down to Garstang and Catterall station, off picture to the right. The site of Garstang Town itself, where the railway's engine and carriage sheds were located, is to the right of the school field.
Lancaster: Looking south over Lancaster and the River Lune in 2012. The West Coast Main Line crosses the river on Carlisle Bridge and Lancaster (Castle) station can be seen beyond. From Lancaster station two lines of trees can be seen forking left and right towards the river. That going left was the link to Lancaster Green Ayre station. To the right was the Glasson Dock branch. The old Midland route from Morecambe was on the south bank of the river and passed under Carlisle Bridge before curving over the river into Green Ayre station. See image [[72974]], a map of this location a century earlier.
Fleetwood [3rd]: The view north eastwards towards Fleetwood Ferry and the old Fleetwood station site in August 2012. See image [[59683]], a map from a century earlier. Across the Wyre estuary Knott End can be seen. The car park is on the site of the old Knott End Railway station and the line ran along the edge of the houses that now overlook the golf course. The slipway used by the local ferry points towards Fleetwood. Near the bottom left of the picture, the green space just beyond the boating lake, a pitch and putt course, once also had a 15-inch miniature railway circling it but this was lifted around 1982.
Montrose: A southbound departure from platform 1 at Montrose on 28 August about to pass below the station's new footbridge, complete with integral passenger lifts.
Manila: Market day at Taguig, right next to the PNR main line to Alabang see image [[40401]]. Notice the market stalls built onto motorbike sidecars; the practical addition of umbrellas; and the skate (in the distance) on the right hand track. Skates are home-built powered wagons, privately owned and operated. They provide a useful service to the public, but contribute nothing to PNR; and can be rather dangerous, as they have no formal collaboration with the PNR working timetable. Understandably, they are not easy to photograph; especially up close.
Fleetwood [2nd]: A view of Fleetwood in 2012. The curved building at the bottom left of the picture is the North Euston Hotel. As the road curves round the first building on the Wyre Estuary is Fleetwood Ferry for the boat to Knott End, which is just off picture to the left. Continuing round there is an open space with a linkspan. This is the site of Fleetwood station, which closed in 1966, and was later where the ferries to Northern Ireland departed before services transferred to Heysham Port. The barren open space on the far side of the peninsula was all railway tracks at one time, and later a lorry trailer park for the ferries, all now disused. The inlet is the entrance to Fleetwood Dock, now given over to leisure craft.
Sheriffhall City Bypass Overbridge: Work in progress on the Borders Railway southern approach to the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass on 28 August 2013.
Eskbank and Dalkeith: View south over the remains of the 1847 Eskbank station on 28 August 2013.
Newmills: Colas Rail Freight 56105 crosses the Bluther Burn bridge at Newmills with the 6D71 Linkswood - Grangemouth empty tanks on 28 August 2013.
Eskbank and Dalkeith: Bridgeworks on the B6392 north of Eskbank station on 28 August 2013 looking along the trackbed towards Sheriffhall.
Preston (Ribble Branch): The Ribble Steam Railway is one of the more accessible industrial railways with a number of different locations from where the bitumen trains can be seen. Here RSR Sentinel Progress growls over the Maritime Way level crossing near the swing bridge with the first of two rakes of loaded tankers heading for the Lanfina terminal.
Armathwaite: 61994 The Great Marquess seems to be going well enough as it approaches Armathwaite from the north on 28 August with the last Fellsman of the 2013 season. However, it appears to have started to struggle further south, resulting in delays to the following Carlisle - Leeds service.
Dalkeith: Shortly after leaving Dalkeith terminus trains passed below this bridge carrying Cemetery Road. The partially infilled cutting and sealed underbridge area (part of a hand car washing operation at this time) are seen here looking west in 2013. The A6094 Eskbank Road runs past on the left, with the old bridge providing a pedestrian link to Dalkeith Cemetery and Ironmills Park. The trackbed beyond the bridge is now a walkway leading to Glenesk Junction, where the Dalkeith branch once joined the Waverley Route.
Dalkeith: A car heading east into Dalkeith along the A6094 on 28 August speeds past the bridge that carried Cemetery Road over the trackbed of the E&DR just west of Dalkeith station. A supermarket and car park are being built on the old station site and this bridge is now the only significant surviving artifact from the 1838 Dalkeith branch. See image [[39723]]
Armathwaite: Freightliner 66529, running not far in front of the southbound Fellsman, approaches Armathwaite on 28th August 2013 with a loaded coal train which, according to the on-line Network Rail WTT, will be from Killoch Colliery to either Ratcliffe or Drax power station.
Newton West Junction: The 1440 Glasgow Central - Euston Pendolino passes under the partly constructed Old Mill Road bridge across the WCML at Cambuslang on 28th August 2015. The rebuilt bridge is due to open at the end of October 2015 see image [[51404]].
Alrewas: The signalbox at Alrewas, which controls a level crossing on a minor road, marks the start of a short single line section on the line from Lichfield to Wichnor Junction. The station at Alrewas was just behind the camera but all trace has been removed since its closure in 1965. The line is now used for freight movements and also by Voyagers running to and from the nearby Barton-under-Needwood depot. [Ref query 34665]
Millburn Yard: A Freightliner Heavy Haul service of cement empties prepares to depart for Oxwellmains from an increasingly weed-encroached Millburn Yard in Inverness on 28th August 2015.
Millburn Yard: Freightliner Heavy Haul services from Oxwellmains to Aberdeen and Inverness now convey – thanks to award of Freight Facilities Grant – bogie vans of bagged cement which formerly moved by road. Both hopper wagons and vans can be seen in this shot of the Lafarge cement terminal deep in Millburn Yard, Inverness on 28th August 2015.
Wichnor Junction: DBS 66140 runs light engine towards Tamworth on 28 August, passing a pillbox in the grounds of the National Memorial Arboretum. The locomotive is crossing the River Tame to the south of Wichnor Junction.
Alrewas: Among the several hundred memorials at the National Memorial Arboretum near Alrewas is this one, dedicated to the Railway Industry. At one end are crests of the GWR, LNER and British Railways. At the other are those of the LMS, SR and British Rail and a rather fine sculpture of a Stanier 8F 2-8-0 stands on top of the plinth.
Wichnor Junction: Seen from the grounds of the National Memorial Arboretum, a Cross Country Class 170 DMU crosses the River Tame heading north towards Burton-upon-Trent.
Atherstone: Another view see image [[36124]] of the former stamping ground of the Beyer Garrett, this time looking towards the A5 and the WCML.
Blackmoor Gate: Blackmoor Gate station has been redeveloped as a pub and restaurant. The East side is more recognizable as a station than the heavily extended West side. The L&B see image [[19797]] plans to relay track down this side as part of their grand expansion plan towards Barnstaple.
Killington Lane: Ho hum, another narrow gauge ballast wagon (see image [[39967]]). This one seems to have a larger capacity - lets hope it is soon helping to build an extension towards Barnstaple.
Sheffield Modeller Association: An open day of the local model engineers in Sheffield.
Woody Bay: Never trust a one-eyed diesel. Scene near the shed, looking towards the station. Notice the information board in the foreground.
Blackmoor Gate: While we are waiting for the L&B to return to this station see image [[56469]], there are facilities for all ages of enthusiasts. Children can play in the play trains, while adults can enjoy food, drink, and views.
Lynton: Here is the other end of the L&B see image [[44005]] in August 2016. This building was a café for a while, but is now a private house. View looks towards the town and sea.
Woody Bay: The modern day L&B may be short, but it has a wonderful atmosphere. View looks North West towards the coast. The engine is Axe see image [[56413]]
Lochridge Junction: This location is south of Stewarton near where the double track becomes single. GBRf 66743 is heading south to Kilmarnock to join with stable mate 66746 on the 'Royal Scotsman' for overnight stabling. [Ref query 25071]
Woody Bay: Narrow gauge steam traction, varnished wooden seats, and glorious views. Three steps to heaven! see image [[31779]]
Lochridge Junction: Sprinter 156514 working 1L55 south to Carlisle on 28 August 2016. The train is south of Stewarton, where the double tracks become single.
Edinburgh Waverley: 46100 'Royal Scot' leaves Waverley with the second Borders steam trip on 28 August.
Edinburgh Waverley: 'Royal Scot' about to leave Waverley with the morning's empty stock of the Borders steam excursion.
Rufford: Northern 150204 calls at Rufford whilst on an Ormskirk to Preston service on 28 August 2016. Rufford is the only passing loop on the line from Farington Curve Jct although it only occasionally sees trains pass. Photo taken from the foot crossing next to the River Douglas bridge.
Whitemoss Level Crossing: 66429 approaching Whitemoss LC with 6K50 ballast from Rogart to Mossend via Millerhill.
Edinburgh Waverley: DBC 67008 leads the empty stock for the afternoon Borders steam trip into platforms 1/20.
Lynton: It's a long way down. Looking over the 45-degree inclined track from the upper town to the lower at Lynton, with two cars crossing.
Rufford: My attempt to recreate the Mark Bartlett photo see image [[53470]] has been thwarted by the vegetation. Here a Preston to Ormskirk shuttle crosses the Leeds Liverpool Canal (Rufford Branch) just south of Rufford station. The bridge also forms an occupation crossing known as Canal Bridge Crossing. While this was a Sunday and there isn't normally any train service on a Sunday, 28 August 2016 was an exception with a special timetable being used in connection with the Ormskirk Motorfest.
Rufford: The last service from Preston to Ormskirk on the special timetable in connection with the Ormskirk Motorfest on 28 August 2016 is seen crossing the Leeds Liverpool Canal (Rufford Branch) to the south of Rufford station. The cameras on the right are in place on the occupation crossing to check that the crossing is being used correctly.
Sheffield Modeller Association: An open day of the local model engineers in Sheffield.
Killington Lane: I guess you have to have the sign on the right for legal reasons, but the one on the left seems to be more elegant. The engine is 'Axe' - does that make the driver an Axe man? Killington Lane looking towards Woody Bay in August 2016.
Braunton: Another view of the now-incongruous signal at Braunton see image [[56400]]. The railway path to Barnstaple resumes to the right of the street sign in the background.
Braunton: One of only two 'Signal Court's in the UK. This signal, which presumably used to have a longer ladder, once stood at the Southern limit of Braunton station, on the line from Barnstaple Junction (behind photographer) to Ilfracombe. [Ref query 11455] The station building and goods shed still stand.
Killington Lane: 'Axe' saunters around its train at Killington Lane. The guard told me that the railway needs to have seven planning applications approved to cross the lane.
Killington Lane: Thats a rather inviting looking open door, especially in the current shortage of steam. View looks towards Woody Bay along the L&BR in August 2016.
Edinburgh Waverley: Piano forte; Waverley has joined Central in going tuneful.
Callander (Dreadnought): The only train in Callander today; the barrel train beside the toilets at the rear of the Dreadnought Hotel. The car park on the site of the station is off to the left with a small amount of metal fencing on the ramp up to Ancaster Road.
Book: Cover of The Insider Rail Guide – Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh by David Spaven and David Fasken published August 2017. See a short review by Mark Bartlett.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: Demolition of the buildings on the east side of Glasgow Queen Street station still in progress in late August 2017. Outwith the demolition site perimeter, work is in progress on the construction of the new staff facilities.
Callander Ticket Platform: Not far from the former ticket platform in Callander is an interesting set of railway relics; Signal, E&G milepost and sign. Wow.
Book: The pocket Insider Rail Guide for the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh line. Co-authored by David Spaven and David Fasken and published by Kessock Books in August 2017. See a short review by Mark Bartlett.
Elgin: The 0900 Inverness to Aberdeen service, formed of two unidentified Class 158 units, waits to cross the 0819 Aberdeen to Inverness service at Elgin on 29th August 2017. Just before the bridge is the junction for the goods yard, formerly the connection to Elgin East (GNoSR) station. The junction was temporarily removed during the engineering works a couple of weeks later.
Callander (Dreadnought): A signal at Callander marking the start of the converted trackbed to Strathyre. It's not an original!
Blackpool Zoo: The resident Severn-Lamb steam outline 2-8-0 is turned at the east end of the 800yd Blackpool Zoo line on 28th August 2018. The diesel engine is carried in the tender but there is a belt drive (which can just be seen) to the third coupled axle of the locomotive. This was the second Rio Grande locomotive I had seen in less than a week See image [[65530]] and both drivers told similar stories. Because the weight is in the tender rather than the loco they suffer from very poor adhesion and rain usually means services have to be halted.
Ramsgreave and Wilpshire: The ex-works looking 1733, in BR Blue livery, brings up the rear on a special passing through Ramsgreave and Wilpshire heading for the S&C on 28th August 2018. The train was the 'Cumbrian Mountain Whistler', the inaugural main line return of D213 Andania See image [[65346]]
Blackpool Zoo: The resident loco on the Blackpool Zoo miniature railway takes four well loaded coaches past the various animal enclosures along the 800 yard line on 28th August 2018. There is a turntable at each end of the line, which must even out the wear of the flanges compared to the circular lines these engines often operate on.
Farington Curve Junction: 195123 on a Blackpool North to York service passes 57312 on the rear of a Chesterfield to Workington railtour on 28 August 2021. The Class 195 is approaching Farington Curve Junction on the WCML and will shortly take the East Lancs line towards Blackburn.
Farington Junction: 45690 'Leander' heads south with support coach on the WCML at Farington Junction whilst on a move from Carnforth WCRC to Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway on 28 August 2021, before hauling 'The Royal Duchy' railtour to Par the following day.
Farington Curve Junction: 37800 and 37510 join the WCML at Farington Curve Jct on 28 August 2021 with a railtour from Chesterfield to Workington. On the rear of the train was 57312 providing ETH to the ten MkIII carriages.
Trowbridge: Twice as ugly. I managed to evade a shopping trip and visited Trowbridge station; and was promptly rewarded, if that is the word, by 70812 and 70801 travelling light from Hinksey Yard at Oxford to Westbury. It is unusual on this line to see any freight locomotives moving on a Sunday.
Trowbridge: The 15.49 from Weymouth to Temple Meads briefly had this modern station all to itself. I had fifteen minutes on the station while my wife went shopping; I saw a light engine movement and two trains, which is a good tally for a Sunday afternoon.
Embsay: LYR A Class 0-6-0 52322 moves around in Embsay station yard and the frames of the shed extension can be seen behind the loco. The original Midland Railway signalbox is on the right.
