Summerau: Kriegloks 52 1098 (with conventional chimney) and 52 3816 (with Giesl ejector) plod uphill not far from their destination at Summerau on a heavy mixed freight which will eventually proceed into Czechoslovakia behind CSD diesel power. The photograph, taken on 29 August 1974, is thought to show the late running 11.17 departure from Linz.
Gmuend: The Czechoslovakian State Railways heavy freight locomotive of class 556.0 was a handsome machine, but slightly spoilt in my view by a front-heavy look thanks to the chimney being set in front of the cylinders. On 29 August 1974 556.0506 has just brought a transfer freight from Caske Velenice into Gmuend and is waiting to take over the return working.
Forres East Junction: 27008 departing from Forres with an eastbound train during the late morning of Friday 29 August 1980.
Farington Junction: A location that has hardly changed since the 1972 WCML electrification, but which made the national headlines in December 2011 when a large fire on the business park seen here closed the line completely for several hours [[36954]]. In August 1980 40030 (formerly Scythia) snakes across from the Down Slow to take a northbound freight onto the East Lancashire line to Blackburn, from where it will probably head for the S&C via Hellifield. 40030 lasted in service until withdrawn from Longsight in April 1983 being cut up one year later at Crewe Works.
Forsinard: A signalman climbs the steps of the south box at Forsinard in August 1985. Could it possibly be...??? See image [[16559]]

Carstairs: Looking along the platform at Carstairs towards Carlisle in August 1997. The odd-looking post in the foreground once held an early, monochrome departures monitor. The screens were removed when the line from Edinburgh was electrified in 1991. With diesel-hauled trains no longer needing to call here to link up to an electric for the journey south (and vice-versa) the number of services calling here was greatly reduced. Even now (2010) electronic information is not deemed necessary here.
Carstairs: The Down platform at Carstairs looking north in August 1997. The by-then oversized building was rather run down and was demolished 2 years later; it was presumably deemed too expensive to repair and maintain. The much more modest building which replaced it seems perfectly adequate.
Carstairs: The seemingly multi-level station that was Carstairs in August 1997
Carstairs: This study at Carstairs in August 1997 perhaps shows why demolition and a new start was the only realistic option. The extensive buildings were shortly to be replaced by a functional ticket office and all that remains from fomer times is the ironwork of this footbridge, with modern steps down to the platform. See image [[25404]]

No 16 is the last surviving example of the locomotives built there and ended its operational life at Cardowan Colliery, Stepps, in 1967. On retirement it spent some time on display in Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline, before being moved to Summerlee. It is now on display within the main hall of the Heritage Centre see image [[21128]].

It can only be a Sunday, when the stock is released from the Shotts line. 156 465 pulls into Burntisland station on 29 August, drowning out the competing bells of the Kirk and the Free Kirk. The Hill Street roadbridge is on quite a steep gradient for a bridge, creating a bit of an optical illusion: an impression of a skew which, on a closer look, isn't there.

Quorn and Woodhouse: Looking back to the nicely restored island platform buildings at Quorn and Woodhouse, from a GCR service departing for Leicester North.
Leicester North: Loco hauled trains to Leicester North stop well down the platform to allow run round. Black 5 45305 draws to a halt with a train from Loughborough on 29th August 2015. The bricked up entrance to the old Belgrave and Birstall station, which Leicester North replaced, is visible on the bridge behind the train.
Westonzoyland: The WZLR is a functioning freight railway - it delivers timber from the gates of the museum to the wood store. Here is the proof. Revenue earning? Well, not exactly... notice the use of threaded steel pipes to make the exhaust system. see image [[56461]]

This image taken from the bridge that carries the Guild Wheel over the WCML. The Guild Wheel is a 21 mile circular cycle route around the City of Preston including alongside the Ribble Steam Railway. Its other WCML crossing is under the Ribble Viaduct immediately south of Preston Station.
Westonzoyland: Gentlemen, start your engine. I'm not sure whether the painters were thinking of traffic lights or a Lego set, but the Simplex loco' is certainly colourful.

Didcot: Real Time Trains informed me there would be little or no freight through Didcot on Saturday 29th August 2020. As it turned out there was a fair amount and, amongst others, I managed to catch DB Schencker 66092 westbound, in for a crew change.

Hampstead Heath: Hampstead Heath, looking east on 29th August 2020. This original Hampstead Junction Railway station opened with the line on 2nd January 1860. In 1953 it was rebuilt by the London Midland Region in rather doleful reinforced concrete and in 1963, when part of the Broad Street to Richmond line, was listed for closure in the Beeching Report. Protests came thick and fast and it was reprieved in 1966. Thirty years later, the line was converted from third rail to OLE and the 1953 buildings were replaced by these waiting areas with traditional style canopies, the only station on the line to have been so treated. Then in November 2007, after the depressing Silverlink era, the entire line was handed over to Transport for London and rechristened London Overground.

Southend Pier [Shore]: One of the new, 2021 delivered, Pier Railway trains, unfortunately not in service on this day, on left and 1986 train, 'Sir William Heygate' that provided the service on this day, seen here at Shore station looking towards Pier Head, on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August 2022. The 1986 trains had been withdrawn from service but 'Sir William Heygate' was brought back when it was found that the new trains needed modifications.
Southend Pier [Shore]: One of the new Southend Pier Railway trains, delivered in 2021, at Shore station but unfortunately 'Not in Service', on the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August 2022. Southend is not a million miles from London but, having gone there specifically to ride one of the new trains, it was a big disappointment to have to make the journey in the surviving 1986 train, 'Sir William Heygate' instead. The new trains, however, are more akin to the old 1949 electric trains in their green and cream livery and which ran on the line until it closed in 1978 (reopened in 1986) and which I rode on many times during happy family day trips to Southend from the late 1950s onwards.
Southend-on-Sea [Lower]: View towards the Thames Estuary from the descending car on the Southend Cliff Railway, a.k.a. Southend Cliff Lift, on the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August 2022.
Southend-on-Sea [Upper]: Exterior of the attractive upper station of the Southend Cliff Railway, Essex, opposite Clifton Terrace, on the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August 2022. This funicular runs on the site of a pioneering moving walkway, a forerunner of today's escalators, constructed in 1901 by an American engineer named Jesse W. Reno. This soon proved noisy and unreliable and the current lift was constructed in 1912 by Waygood & Company which, two years later, became part of the Otis Elevator Company. It was modernised in 1930, 1959 and 1990 with the car being replaced each time. It closed in 2003 for a major refurbishment but new EU regulations, that designated the lift as a cable car, required modifications and it was not until 25th May 2010 that it finally reopened, the restoration costing three million pounds with 650k spent on the car alone.
Bo'ness: The Past, in the shape of a 1959-built 'Blue Train' is passed by the possible Future, hydrogen-fuelled 614 209 as it heads for Kinneil Halt on 29 August 2022.
Southend Central: 357326, seen through zoom lens, with a C2C service from Shoeburyness to Liverpool Street (diverted from Fenchurch Street), calling at Southend Central on the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August 2022.
Southend Pier [Shore]: One of the old 1986 Severn Lamb trains, 'Sir William Heygate', on the Southend Pier Railway heading across the Thames Estuary from Pier Head to Shore (right to left) on the world's longest pier, on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August 2022. Despite brand new trains having been delivered a few months earlier, none were in service on this day which was a great disappointment.
Harringay Green Lanes: 710272, London Overground from Barking to Gospel Oak (services between Barking Riverside and Barking were suspended on the Bank Holiday) arriving at Harringay Green Lanes on 29th August 2022.
Southend Pier [Pier Head]: The now withdrawn of the two 1986 3ft. gauge Southend Pier Railway trains, 'Sir John Betjeman', was broken up but this driving car is on display at Pier Head station. Another part of this train stands further back along the pier, providing a place for visitors to sit while enjoying refreshments. The other 1986 train, 'Sir William Heygate' currently remains operational and provided the service on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August 2022.
South Tottenham: South Tottenham signal box on the Gospel Oak platform, seen from 710267 departing for Barking, on 29th August 2022. This station was also served by the former Palace Gates to North Woolwich service until its withdrawal on 7th January 1963.
Southend Pier [Pier Head]: Southend Pier Railway train 'Sir William Heygate' at Pier Head station, on 29th August 2022. This is the survivor of the two 3ft. gauge diesel trains introduced when the line reopened in 1986 after an eight year closure and was running on this day, even though I was expecting to ride in one of the new trains delivered in 2021, one of which was alas standing 'Not in Service' at Shore station after it was discovered they needed modifications.
