Horwich Works

Furness Railway 0-4-0 No 3, built by Bury, Curtis and Kennedy of Liverpool in 1846, on display inside Horwich Works in 1960. Nicknamed 'Old Coppernob' due to the copper cladding around its dome shaped firebox, it was latterly employed on local work around Barrow, before withdrawal in 1900. The locomotive shows some signs of shrapnel damage from German bombs, received while on display at Barrow station early in WWII. It was later moved to Horwich, where it remained until 1963, then to Clapham Railway Museum until 1975 and finally to the NRM in York, where it now forms part of the national collection.
