Beeching's conundrum: looking North at the A43, a dual carriageway which at this point runs parallel to the trackbed of the S&MJ, at 3.40 on a Friday afternoon, there is a slow moving queue of HGV's and coaches. Should the railway have been retained? Only if this traffic was available in the mid-1960's, when industry and retail were much less concentrated in regional clusters - and people owned a lot less cars - and commuted over much shorter distances. see image 27554 for further debate and conjecture.
