One of the minor mysteries in the history of the Dunblane, Doune and Callander railway is this apparent attempt to relay and re-use part of it during the 1980s. This photo shows how, in March 1988, a stretch of the track bed leading up to the former junction at Dunblane was cleared of vegetation and re-ballasted. It looked as if there was a plan to extend and upgrade the remaining stub of the line (visible in the distance) as a reversal/layover siding for local services clear of the mainline. However, all work stopped shortly after the photo was taken, suggesting that if there was such an intention, it was suddenly abandoned in favour of a timetabling solution.
