Smardale Gill Viaduct

A distant view of Smardale Gill Viaduct from the south-west above Scandal Beck - from this distance the structure looks fairly insignificant. The Stainmore line once ran below what appear to be natural rock outcrops to the left of the picture, but are actually the remains of Smardale Quarry, once a major user of the railway (a derelict limekiln can be discerned towards the centre of the shot).  25th May 2017
