Smardale Gill Viaduct (1861-1962)

Description

This masonry viaduct was built to carry a double track, but only ever carried a single line. The line was slewed to the middle of the bridge.

The bridge is 184 yds long, 90 ft high and has 14 arches.

The viaduct is now disused.

Also known as Smardalegill Viaduct.

The contractor was Wrigg & Co.
