Edinburgh Princes Street Station, which closed in 1965, was wedged between Rutland
Street/Square and Lothian Road. The site is now a financial district. The
bridge I am standing on (looking north east) didn't exist at the time.
Under me there were sidings 5 wide between the back gardens of Rutland
Square (left) and the outside wall of the station was more or less where
the building is on the extreme right. If the closure did nothing else it
did provide a useful 'urban fastway', as it was called, on the trackbed of
the approaches. Miraculously this is rarely congested even today.
