This funicular railway was opened in 1910 for the development of skiing in Jämtland and was closely connected to the arrival of the railway in the village of Åre. It was originally owned and operated by the Swedish national railway company SJ. It rises 156m to a hotel, Fjällgården, on the mountainside with an intermediate stop where the two cars pass. It is currently operated jointly by the hotel management in summertime and the local development company Skistar in the winter. In the picture the car has just passed under the main road to Norway and is approaching the lower terminal station Åre Torg which is right in the middle of the village.
