A Class 309 EMU, forming an evening service from Clacton & Walton to Liverpool Street, approaches Hythe along the bank of the River Colne on 9th August 1976. A halt for local services was proposed near this location in the early 1960s to serve the nearby University of Essex, which was under construction at the time. The halt was intended for students obliged to live off campus in towns as far away as Clacton and Brightlingsea, as well as university staff. However, by the time the first students arrived in 1964, the Brightlingsea service had already become a casualty of the Beeching cuts and the plan was shelved after limited stop bus services took the potential trade.
