Exterior of Stanhope station, Weardale Railway, on 11th May 2019. When the railway first reached Stanhope on 22nd October 1862, it ran into a terminus type station which became a goods yard when the line was extended to Wearhead on 21st October 1895 and which included a replacement through station to the south-west of the original. The 1895 station originally closed to passengers with the line from Bishop Auckland on 29th June 1953. (For details of its restoration and of the line itself, I would respectfully suggest you google the Weardale Railway website for further information as it is too complex to precis here.)
