While little trace remains of the northern section of the Newbattle Collieries mineral line, which ran through woods and farmland, one notable survivor serves as a monument to the extensive mining activity once undertaken in the area. This circular red brick air shaft, standing to the east of the trackbed near Kippilaw, around 250 yards south of the former northern terminus at Shaws Coal Depot, once provided ventilation to one of the pits of the Newbattle Colliery. Photographed in September 2019 looking south east from the A6106.
