Barnstaple Town: A forlorn Barnstaple Town station photographed from a rickety signal post on 8th September 1976. Although the line through here to Ilfracombe closed in 1970, its infrastructure remained in limbo as preservation attempts continued up until 1975. A final train was run that year, then the track was removed and the cause was lost. The station building remains in a restored form, as do part of the canopy and the signal box.

Ilfracombe: Looking as if it has received a direct hit from a missile, the terminus at Ilfracombe undergoing demolition on 8th September 1976. We might imagine a prophet of doom here on a summer Saturday in 1956, trying to convince station staff struggling with thousands of arriving and departing holidaymakers that, 20 years in the future, three men and a bulldozer would be busy wiping the premises off the map forever. The equivalent challenge in 2009 is to try this at a motorway services area on the M6...

Barnstaple Town: The former Barnstaple Town station was connected to Barnstaple Junction station via this sharply curved bridge over the River Taw. The view is from the Barnstaple Town side showing the end of the line from the junction as it was on 8th September 1976. The bridge fell into disuse in 1970 when the passenger service to Ilfracombe was withdrawn, but the last train ran over it in 1975. To the disappointment of local anglers, it was finally demolished in 1977.

Nuremberg Hbf: There seemed to be a few interesting features when the Paris-Prague train stopped here. On the right was a DB Class 218 diesel hydraulic loco waiting at the platform with a passenger train. In the left background was a Class V60 shunter and a goods wagon in the centre background seemed to be sitting on a track at platform level. In the foreground there were some pieces of equipment which looked like large microphones set up between the platforms. Maybe they were checking noise levels?

No trace remains of the level crossing, while the tramway bridge and cutting have since been infilled. Grimsargh: The Preston and Longridge Railway was built as a horse drawn tramway taking stone from the Longridge quarries. Many of the significant public buildings in Preston are constructed from Longridge stone. The line was later connected to the rest of the rail network, steam worked and opened to passenger trains, although these ceased in 1930. The last goods train from Longridge departed in 1967 and the line has gradually disappeared but this embankment to the north of Grimsargh, climbing at 1:40, is a very visible survivor.
