The Lambton Railway, latterly the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Railway was the largest private railway in County Durham, its purpose being to transport coal to export staithes by way of running powers over the North Eastern Railway. It survived through NCB days until closure in 1984 with Lambton Engine Works closing in December 1989.
