A 1907 OS map extract of central Wigan, showing the three stations in use at that time. Wallgate and North Western, cheek by jowl as it were, and the terminus of the Great Central branch from Glazebrook, the now largely forgotten Wigan Central. This finally closed in 1964 but with its indirect route to Manchester Central had always been the poor relation. Once closed a major road scheme pushed through the site and all trace of Central was cleared away. In the top left hand corner, in the fork of the Southport and Liverpool lines, the L&YR steam shed can be seen but the LNWR shed at Springs Branch is off the bottom of this map.
